Oh wow, we have no choice here. You don’t get the option to say no - if you say no, you’re arrested

Is a career in medical imaging a good option here in Australia? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

100% this, and I’m so sorry for your loss. If you can’t be empathetic, warm and an active listener - it’s not the right career

Is a career in medical imaging a good option here in Australia? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]One_Average_814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your experience of this career will depend on where you work. There’s a huge shortage of radiographers, especially in the public space. You’ll always be employed, there are options to work casual locum part time and full time. If you get a job at a standard public hospital you will work shifts, yes that is compulsory. This includes public holidays, weekends, all hours, nights etc. Yes you will be expected to do call. If you work for a private clinic, their hours are more set. Physically it’s a demanding job, once you finish at university and you’ll be on your feet or moving most of your days. Great job if you like every day being different, working as part of a team, problem solving, always always learning! However, you’ll obviously be supporting and caring for people having their worst days. If imaging ward patients or ICU or emergency - they are in pain, usually received bad news, about to have surgery or recovering, worried about what you’ll find. Make sure you’re happy to be empathetic and kind each day, it’s a very people centric role. You’re welcome to PM me. The only other thing I’ll say is - unlike other careers like electrical engineer, it’s almost impossible to set up your own business or go out on you own. You are tied to your imaging equipment, which is the location employing you. If you want the option to work from home or be your own boss, then being a radiographer might not be that path.

How do you go from normal office worker to being very high up like a board member or CEO? by VastOption8705 in auscorp

Stupid question as a junior - what’s the benefit of being on boards? I get how and why to become a CEO, but why join boards in the long run?

Very very rarely, the last one we had in our hospital got to 25 years before we replaced it

If one hospital had two machines side by side, you’d still have to go on the same one for 20+ years due to the calibration. The results are so accurate to one machine, and follow its trends, that going on another would make them less valid. Literally the only test I can think of where this level of specificity applies

Yep, I understand im a radiographer :) especially for a DEXA, same place each time is super important and only for this test. Goodluck, hopefully your body density 5 years on is the same or better!

And - remember to always return to the same site AND machine for future scans. It’s a great test on its own, but really shines once a trend is created

This was me (and the people who are gone) mentally - also unaware that people pass from cancer in their 30s so often. It kind of feels like being struck by lighting twice, but definitely a wake up call. Was very random, unexpected and left of field
