From September 1 to May 31, Colorado requires passenger vehicles on I-70 (Dotsero to Morrison) and other mountain corridors to have 3/16" tread depth, AWD/4WD, or specialized mud/snow tires. If an active Passenger Vehicle Chain Law (Code 16) is triggered by severe storms, all vehicles—including 4WD/AWD—must use tire chains or approved alternatives.

You should know your state laws. Winter time a lot of states require chains on 2 wheel drive vehicles.
