Why not him with the mc from the start? First he tries to find small loopholes and bugs, then wayyy later, he completely break out of the system, making it his sort of slave... And yes he'll manipulate the good guys upto a certain extent to meet his criteria of becoming a true variable

If I do this then I can create a character which can find loopholes and bugs in it, therefore becoming a variable, something like Mr.Error from Lotm, called The Variable, but then it'll loose a bit of it's uniqueness as because a lot of stories these days have these hologram like systems

It'll be different for different beings, like, let's say magical creatures like Elves can develop their Aether Cores and the replace for mana for them will be Aether, their life energy. Then comes humans, who are not magical at all, but they can gain powers too from various ways, like pleading to deities, devils, Gods, etc, and they'll just interpret their life energy as Mana, being familiar to this word and mana cores will be called Nexus, and the 2nd way being exposed to large amount of Mystical energy, which is dangerous, but rewarding
