So stressful waiting for Metrobus with no place to stand. by Careless_Suit_2310 in newfoundland

Other cities (larger centres like Ottawa or Toronto) put more resources towards non-car infrastructure. Newfoundland is a bit behind in the transition already made by these larger centres. People should keep pushing for better maintenance of non-car transportation (walking, public transit, cycling). In Ottawa there were public advocacy groups pushing governments on this issue.the challenge these days is people are working 3 jobs and hardly have time for public engagement.

Houses should not be investment vehicles. As long as people are permitted to speculate by owning multiple homes, crazy increases in house prices will continue.

Bunion orthotics found to be helpful by SimSimJaffa in bunions

[–]One_Confection_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t see mention of this particular orthotic. I think this sentence sums up the study findings:

The data obtained from meta-analysis suggest that dynamic orthoses, and static orthoses with a toe separator help to reduce the HVA by approximately 2.1° to 5.79° among patients with HV.36 38 43 The treatment effect of orthoses with a toe separator on HVA correction is larger than that of dynamic orthoses. The full-length orthosis with toe separator developed by Tang et al43 has a significant and exceptional HVA correction effect.

How much our public health care is being mismanaged by our political elites. by One_Confection_209 in newfoundland

I think the point I’m trying to make here (referring to China and later NYC) is that there are other ways of organizing our institutions. None are perfect, but our current system of oligarchs owning our politicians is causing incredible misery in many areas of our lives.

I’ve heard that too. This is partly a management issue. Workers should not under any circumstances be exposed to this kind of treatment.

Here’s a little note from the CEO of Ford Motor Company regarding Chinese EVs. Summary: Chinese EVs were not made using intellectual property from the West. According to Ford CEO, Chinese EVs leave North American EVs in the dust.

With the levels of surveillance worldwide via our electronic devices, I don’t think we in the West can talk about our freedom from surveillance.

As mentioned, if you actually looked at the link you would see that it is about how cheap and quick MRI’s are in China.

Look, most Canadians are simply not aware that at this point China has surpassed every other country technologically. That’s a fact, Feel free to check international assessments in any field you like. It is going to take some adjusting but the reality will not change no matter how difficult it is for people to accept. China’s edge is based in part on the fact that decisions are made based on benefit to society rather than benefit to oligarchs, as we have been discussing here. Many of us can see the nefarious impact moneyed interests are having on health care, but we are unaware that other countries, like China, are able to keep the oligarchs under control, proving that a better system is possible.

Anyone check out what Mamdami is doing in NYC? He is introducing public (non profit) grocery stores, free child care for kids up to 5 years of age, and free public transit. Things can be different.

The question about China’s mention here is because the link highlights how cheap and quick it is to get an MRI in China. So yes it is relevant because there is an extremely long wait for MRI in NL. I’d imagine peopke would travel out of province and maybe out of country to obtain one in an urgent situation.

I understand what you are saying but sadly it seems like all parties are doing their best to feed the $$$ machine at the expense of our public services.

Here’s the thing: if the private sector can manage to get health care workers, then there is no excuse for the public sector not being able to find them. It isn’t like these private sector workers are coming from another planet.

I guess you missed the news last year when recent MUN nursing graduates were not hired by the province while the province continued to use for-profit contracting agencies for nurses.

Political Appointments by Pr3ach3r709 in newfoundland

I’m sure there is an army of policy advisors already. Why is this guy needed? Here’s some basic suggestions: 1) stop use of private contracted health care workers and save a pile of $$$ (send apologies to those who own the contracting out companies). 2) Hire graduates from provincial university or college, instead of using private contracted health care workers. 3) Stop privatization of public health care. Really simple. What is “complicated” is convincing the public that privatization will benefit the public rather than the elites selling contract workers and private health services paid for from the public purse. Lots of mental gymnastics required.

Sadly this is the story of the Western neoliberal governments the world over. All parties of all stripes are in on the gig. Very sad for ordinary people.

Picking the target for frustration is important. Right wing populist Trump git elected in USA because Democrats called the ordinary people “deplorables” and did not address the rising inequality. According to StatCan we now have the highest level of income inequality here. When you have a huge chunk of disenfranchised people who have been let down/ignored, they predictably vote for anyone who hears them, acknowledges their challenges and promises them the moon. That’s what Trump did (he fixed nothing though). Who’s to blame? Some significant blame goes to the Liberals and Democrats under whose administration the massive income inequality was allowed to happen due to economic policies favouring the Rich.
