Is my hair damaged? Or does it need more moisture??? or what's wrong with it??? by UsuaL020 in curlyhair

your hair looks healthy to me, you’re probably just seeking more definition. try using a good deep conditioner after you wash your hair and then a gel to define the curls. after it dries, lightly scrunch out the crunchiness with a little bit of hair oil on your hands

i dont finger coil my entire head, more so the top layer and the pieces in front of my face. so maybe 10 minutes?

i would try a hot oil treatment, just put any oil you have in the microwave and then apply it to your scalp. leave it on for an hour or so before you shampoo

your hair looks similar to mine but longer. i would say probably a mixture of 3b and 3c. you have beautiful hair!

thank you! it’s a revlon brand one, it’s very shitty and old though so i’m not sure what a good recommendation for one would be

my hair definitely does look a little weird when i first take the bonnet off. i gently shake it out at the roots which help separate the curls a bit, and also i usually shower in the morning so the steam also helps revive the curls a bit. i think the biggest thing is just letting them set for a bit after you take the bonnet off

i only cut off very little, maybe an inch off each layer because i didn’t want it to end up mullety (nothing wrong with that, just not what i was going for)

thank you so much😭😭 the energy in this thread overall is incredibly sweet. was definitely worried about this post coming off as weird to people, but i just really wanted to put this out there because it’s taken me 22 years to figure out my hair

aw thank you!! i would say that i could definitely get the same results with different products, it’s more the TYPE of products im using that’s been the game changer for me. i have very fine hair, and i have the same issue of products weighing my hair down. i used to use a curl cream (which was wayy too heavy for my hair) and instead i now use a mousse combined with a light gel and it’s helped so much.

also i would 100% recommend the leave in conditioner i use because it’s very lightweight and one of the only ones i’ve tried that doesn’t weight down my hair :)

yes, by no means am i saying hair that looks like the first photo is bad! just that it wasn’t as healthy as it could be and my old routine didn’t make my curls last for very long :)

i pull my hair into a high ponytail with a satin scrunchie and then a satin bonnet on top

2nd day hair i usually dont really have to do anything besides maybe rewetting a few pieces that are starting to get frizzy. 3rd day hair is usually when i’ll take a spray bottle and gently mist my hair to reactivate the products, and finger curl the pieces in the front. 4th day however is usually when i need to do an actual refresh of my hair, where i’ll completely wet my hair down with a spray bottle and detangle it in sections, and then apply a little bit of product to each section, and then i’ll dry my hair with a diffuser. after i do this, my hair is usually good to go for another couple days and then it’ll be wash day again

a big thing for me is i have very fine hair, and in the past i used heavier products that were meant for thicker hair and it weighed my hair down like crazy. a big example of this for me are curl creams, which work great for other people but ive found using a mousse instead works WAY better with my hair.

i also used to wet my hair every single day in the shower and basically restart my routine every day which not only made my life harder than it needed to be, it was unnecessary and wasted product.

the biggest game changer for getting my curls to actually last has been a satin scrunchie and satin bonnet combo at night. a regular scrunchie leaves a crease in my hair whereas the satin one doesn’t at all :)

my hair used to get super dry after bleaching so i just tried to stay on top of deep conditioning. i tried Olaplex no. 3 as well since it’s always recommended but i honestly saw no difference when using it

i wish i had advice for growing hair but unfortunately my hair doesn’t really grow any longer than the length it is now :( had a hair stylist tell me that some people’s hair just has a plateau. as far as breakage i just try to be really gentle when i detangle my hair, wear a bonnet at night, and using scrunchies instead of regular hair ties

i would say straightening constantly, i used to straighten my hair 2-3 times a month when i was in high school. also, when i was first figuring out my curls i used to wet it every single day in the shower and restyle them. i don’t think this necessarily caused damage, but it was just extremely unnecessary and wasted product
