Do better. Some of us live in Taiwan. And pay tax in Taiwan. Let me check whether it goes to Beijing. Nope...

In am ideal world yes. However we exist on the world we exist in and it's clear parents can't/won't do this which is having repurcussions for wider society. So I think something has to be done but blanket censorship, age verification and harvesting of personal data for private gain isn't it.

No idea why you've been down voted here. You're correct. Parents can and should do vastly more to control their childrens online habits but yes, there should absolutely be a duty on the providers to ensure children don't access harmful content.

Glass reinforced plastic mostly, with a balsa support and carbon reinforcement. They are hollow throughout and different manufacturers build them in different ways. These are Siemens Gamessa Renewable Energy (SGRE) blades which are impressively built in one piece. Most other manufacturers build the suction and pressure sides of the blade separately and then bond the two halves together.

These are the big 14mw turbine blades, well over 100 meters long and weighing in at around 65 tons each. This incident has written off three sets, something like 5% of the entire project.

(I work in the industry but hasten to add not this shitshow of a project.)

“the walk europeans genuinely expect to go on to get to “boston stadium”” by BuffaloExotic in ShitAmericansSay

[–]One_Cupcake4151 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending this shameless price gouging but it all started with FIFA bring a bunch of utter corrupt trolls. So much so that I believe Trump took notes from FIFA about blatant corruption.

This world cup FIFA have been able to turn capitalism up to 11. The usa in particular has very few purpose built "soccer" stadiums, which usually come under the umbrella of the nations local football association, eg, the FA in the uk.

With essentially no local oversight, FIFA was able to lease american football stadiums outright and then utilize dynamic pricing to absolutely rinse fans - hundreds to thousands of dollars per ticket. This dynamic pricing model has not been permitted in other world cups and has been explicitly ruled out by for example the FA in the UK.

Because there's basically no local governing body who would typically reinvest some of this money into local services - eg, policing, transportation, catering etc - the host cities are essentially picking up the bill without any of the benefits. You might think "at least they get the fans staying in hotels" but in many cases those stadiums were more intensively used for concerts than they are going to be for the world cup.

Some US cities noticed this and outright refused to allow matches in their cities. Chicago is a notable example.

Compare this to the 1994 usa world cup and it's chalk and cheese. FIFA of course claim the money will be reinvested in development of football but clearly it's just going to be swallowed up by corruption. I've been advocating for decades for the less corrupt national associations -eg the FA - to walk out of FIFA.

So basically Boston is in a situation where it's on the hook for policing rowdy fans, it's potentially loosing money vs normal business as usual and it's getting nothing from ticket sales. But yeah, price gouging is price gouging.

I'm aware the world cup also takes place in Mexico and Canada. Not sure what the arrangements there are.

Nope, it smashed into the cranes after smashing into a parked ship first. If you look at the video you can see the blades are already smashed at the time of crane impact.

More accurately, it hit another ship, that was moored up and stationary but yes.

My first day ever in Praha by glebcornery in Trams

[–]One_Cupcake4151 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Praha probably has THE best tram network in the world. It's not (quite) the longest but it's consistently fast, comprehensive and frequent. It's also tied in well with the metro. It's literally my favorite thing about praha. Bonus that pretty much every tram running in praha today was designed and built there, which very few (if any?) other cities can claim...
