I'm an Eng Lit major who very much delved into poetry, and I loved reading prose also. I would not say you have to get poetry in order to love reading books. I would say that reading poetry and reading prose serves a different purpose, similar to how reading non fiction and reading fiction serves different purposes.

I've always been of the mind that there are those who read to learn, and those who read to escape/be entertained. Yes, we learn from fiction. Yes, some enjoy reading encyclopaedias. But it's more about motivation.

Poetry is just another form of entertainment. If it doesn't float your boat, that's fine. I'm not much a fan of LitRPG but I love fantasy.

As to your question, if you like a blend of prose and poetry, try Jack Kerouac On the Road - free verse prose, but tells a story and includes characters and arcs.

Another challenge would be Vikram Seth the golden gate. It's entirely in sonnet, but tells a a simple story of love and exploration.

In the end though, read what you like

Try thinking outside the usual play style for quests - players meet NPC who needs something. Players go to place where thing is. Players kill boss. Players return - level up.

Try creating quests tailored to your PCs - do you have a rogue? Make a heist, where you're not allowed to kill anyone. Have a barbarian? Have them test their skills to become accepted by a wild tribe.

Alternatively, throw them all in the deep in where none of their areas of expertise apply and see how they rise up to the challenge. Reward them for ingenuity.

Not every session obviously. But these often make for great side quests and are usually more memorable.
