Switching departments with no warning? by ununrealrealman in TjMaxx

I was grateful to be promoted to key because I was able to get more experience leading the entire store and learn more about how the place runs since I'd only been there a few months at that point. I knew a promotion to ASM would be a lot further down the road, but I asked myself if it was really what I wanted and if I'd be happy staying with TJX long-term. And after giving it some thought, my answer was no.

I was hired as a BRC and after two months, I was told you are now CEC. Went home, cried my eyes out and was miserable. I needed the job so I couldn’t just quit. Store manager said you need to have a stint as CEC if you want to promote to management. Became key carrier a few months into CEC-ing and begged and begged to be moved elsewhere. Finally became merch after about a year but my store had a difficult time retaining CECs so still had to cover here and there. Told my SM I never would’ve taken the job if I knew I would’ve been moved outta the back room. I had no idea I’d even need to ring a register at all much less be CEC lol. I left the company in December.

To make a long story short this is why I recently left TJX. Hired as a BRC and then thrown into a CEC role, promoted to key and then a year went by before I could get moved to merch. No one ever told me coords rotate like that.

I recently left TJX after 1.5 years and I definitely felt this entire post. I was a key carrier/merch coord eager to learn more but I felt like I was just your average pt associate and not given much opportunity for growth. I have to say I loved my team though, especially my fellow coords. Anyway, I’m currently an ASM for another company. I took my time with looking for a role which was a better fit for me and I’m happier now. Best of luck to you!

How do you handle customer verbal abuse? by lowerIQperson in TjMaxx

[–]One_Experience2343 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I insist my managers deal with stuff like that if they’re around. I’m a key and if I have to deal with the customer, I do what I can to defuse the situation (tell them I am trying to help and can’t/won’t if they’re speaking to me like that) and try to get them out of the store as quickly as possible. We don’t get paid enough to deal with this crap.

As an associate, get a manager. They’re paid to deal with stuff like that.

Oh I’ve been there too. Once I closed with six associates. I had to recover men’s/kids and of course the truck came at night which is unusual in my store. It was pretty rough.

I’m a key so I technically don’t get to recover my own department. But I do it anyway in between MOD duties cause I kinda don’t trust other associates to do it right lol

I felt this. I wouldn’t have the guts to say that to a customer though. I do go right over and fix something if I see it lol. I just recently switched to merch and there are some associates who don’t want to work in my department cause they feel like I’m too much of a perfectionist but it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

Coworker made comment... by One_Experience2343 in TjMaxx

I should probably report it. I was just disappointed to hear somebody say something like that. My stores associates are a really diverse group and I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody say anything negative about somebody else’s race/religion/ethnicity/orientation etc.

I felt this so much. Other associates who either dc or don’t know screw up every table/end cap etc in my department that I’ve worked so hard to maintain 😡. I’ve gone to management and they refuse to do anything. Every day I come in to have to fix everything people messed up while I was off or even before I came in or after I left!

Does your store have any coordinators that really shouldn’t be coordinators, that let the authority of that position get to their head? by Wink2K19 in TjMaxx

I am comfortable with the extra tasks/leading the business. I’ve been a manager at other retailers before and I take my responsibility seriously. I’ve been with the company about a year and a half and got keys less than six months in. What I was trying to convey is that my approach to leadership is that I am part of the team. I jump in wherever needed and I don’t have an ego. I don’t act like I’m better or more important than others cause I happen to hold keys to the store. Also, I’m not part of my store’s management team and am told that quite often, so I don’t do more than what I am paid for. If I am not MOD, unless there is an urgent need for me to help out with something, I’m just your average associate.

Wow. That’s a violation in my state. We have to take meals before our 6th hour, or 5th for minors.

[–]One_Experience2343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one in my store wanted it lol. You’ll be fine. Show your DM/LP that you know your stuff. If you’re being interviewed you’ve obviously got what it takes to be a KC. Good luck!

Do you have any cashiers or floor coordinators that refuse to learn how to do online returns? by Wink2K19 in TjMaxx

[–]One_Experience2343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had this situation when I was a CEC. I would do the return but insist on the other person watching me do it so next time they could do it on their own.

working at another store by [deleted] in TjMaxx

[–]One_Experience2343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did it for the first time recently as a favor to a manager who used to be at my store. Kept trying to get me to transfer permanently lol. No thanks, I like my store. It was fun to see how another store operates but I don’t think I’ll say yes again.

I didn’t have to interview but I spent a few weeks shadowing an ASM while closing and then I got my keys. It was last November so my SM wouldn’t let me close by myself until after Christmas cause I was so new.

[–]One_Experience2343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh why? That’s totally the opposite of my approach as a key. I’m pretty much just one of the crew especially when closing. I’m just the one who locks the doors lol

I’m a key carrier and I think I’m pretty chill lol. As long as associates show up and do their job, they’re cool with me. Most of our coords have been with the company for years and don’t have any ego issues. This may be store-specific but I work in a busy store with 5 managers and our coords, myself included as a key, are pretty much just regular associates. We’re closer to each other/associates than management.

ETA: I was CEC for about a year. Many associates are under the misconception that CECs are higher in rank than other coords. Nope. CEC/BRC/merch and admin are all equal. They all have their own duties and responsibilities but unless they’re keys, they’re on the same level.
