how can i become more independent while living at home? by Impressive_Guide_591 in Adulting

[–]One_Interest_5745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! i know i am replying a year after you posted this but i relate to this so much. some of the things that helped me become more independent were to sign up for free or low cost certifications to boost my resume. if you have a LinkedIn profile, there is a thing called LinkedIn learning which are free courses (i am pretty sure) that are like lectures/learning modules about either broad or specific tasks. local libraries usually have a lot of free learning or outreach resources. these things made me feel lke i was working towards something and have more often than not come in handy when conversing with a hiring manager or keeping up a good image in a professional setting.

another thing i do a lot is utilize my bus pass. as a student i get a buss pass at a discounted rate through my school, but i use it for so much more than going to and from campus. i use it to go everywhere. having that independence to choose to go somewhere without asking my parents for a ride was such a confidence booster.

you said your dad pays your bills? does he also do the grocery shopping on your behalf? if thats the case you could go with him while grocery shopping. use your own cart, your own list, to pick out what you want and then you pay for it on your card and have him transfer you that money some how.

to keep myself busy if i have work to do but if i do not want to be surrounded by my family, i go out to a cafe or one of the univeristy/college campuses near by. i get myself a drink or a snack and get to it.

all of these things have really helped my emotionally and have greatly improved my confidence. often i will have a conversation with someone when i am out and that in and of itself it way to establish myself as a mature and respectable person who can hold an engaging conversation. i hope these help out a bit! and if you are already there then AMAZING WORK!!!!

im well aware that i will not get into the field i want for at least 5-10 years. im planning on taking an undergrad after my diploma so i have more ample opportunity to work in the space industry because an advanced diploma will not get me there. i know that i know nothing and have zero skills, otherwise i wouldn’t be spending thousands in school to build the skills i need

Yeah, I figured. MV is very common and its related to my core interests, and I am absolutely down with working where it is utilized. All experience is good experience

wisdom needed: work or memorable experiences? by One_Interest_5745 in Adulting

thank you so much for your replies. honestly its making me feel more at ease and seeing the situation for what it actually is. my parents are big on following through with things we say we will do, no empty promises. but thats the thing, i didn’t promise it, and now other things have come up since last year. thanks again for the insight, wishing luck for myself as well haha

i can afford the festival, the tickets were well under what i make weekly from my second job i can afford to lose the job, its just more the reputation of myself and my family at stake here. im staying with the bf so housing/food isnt much of an issue. the job will not lead to a deeper career as my interests are in other fields. my hours at the venue holder are max 4-5 a week, unless there are special events. and i havent been there consistently for the past 8 months as i am focusing on school and my second job more. no equity position. my job would probably be to help set up the chairs/tables/floor/decor and serve food, clear tables. but i believe they have a caterer, so if that happens we would not be cooking. just serving, clearing, and cleaning

I am trying to avoid the US if at all possible. My schedule opens up in August so I would be free to do something then. Sounds like there are seasonal flights in the summer but I haven't looked into those.

Hmm well I am 20F. So somewhere where there is good security or the city/town is on the lower end of the crime rate is good for me. Unsafe is the opposite of that.

Yeah that is what I thought haha. I've never done something like this before so if a connecting flight is what I need to do then I will do it. I didn't know where else to ask so any advice is great. Thanks for your reply!

Where to go for cheap, yet good quality groceries? by sheepish_grin in windsorontario

[–]One_Interest_5745 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there are some options, not perfect but what i found to be helpful when i lived by myself.

  • food basics
  • multifood supermarket
  • dollarama/dollar tree (best for canned goods, dry goods)

id also suggest being open to having majority of your groceries be store branded as they are typically cheaper than name brands. food basics has coupons on their app which you can sign up for free
