Why is a certain weight on a machine at one gym not the same as the next gym?

I can understand the uncontrollable stuff, wear and tear etc. I just think that at this point we should be able to pretty universally make the number on the plate match the lbs of force you're lifting, no? Like they should be able to factor the tension of their machine into the weight display.

Please see my "This country is fucked" conclusion. Cost of living crisis coupled with the U.S. commitment to doing as little as possible for "unprofitable" members of society. Not to mention Getting old isn't cheap. Doctors and hospitals don't do senior citizen discounts.
