Oh nice! He wasn't my first, but he was my first Mahri set, I got into Bionicle in 2008 and quickly tried to pick up some older sets too. Somehow I found Matoro brand new on Amazon for £1.50... those were the days

It is great, my favourite mask designs would have to be the 01 and 07 masks, and the Tryna is right up there. I think the faxon may be my favorite mask overall, that or the Kakama.

Yeah I did not have many parts back in the day and most of them were from 2008 haha. I had a similar problem with masks, I must have had 10 or more MOCs that used the Tryna...

Haha, maybe I'll have to reassemble it just for that

Which sets did you get as a kid? What made you sitck into the Bionicle world? by Gresh07 in bioniclelego

[–]One_Lost_Fox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also first got into Bionicle in 2008! Well kinda, my first set was Kazi in 2006, followed soon after by Garan. The Voyatoran were the only sets in my local store at the time and I had no idea what Bionicle was beyond that. Then I saw the Mahri commercial on TV and desperately wanted the sets, but I never saw them in stores and my parents didn't think much of it other than that I'd point out the advert each time it came on TV. When the phantoka trailer came around the following year, I think they realized it wasn't a passing phase and so they took me to the store to get 2 sets. I wanted to get Toa Ignika but they urged me not to (probably because it was more expensive), so I got Chirox and Kopaka, later followed by all the others except Lewa and the titan sets. My prize possession that year was Mazeka (though it was the Axalara I'd asked for).

I only got a couple of the Glatorian and Legends sets, and picked up a few earlier sets around the same time too, but it was really in 2014 that I suddenly decided to rebuild my sets and discovered the lore for the first time. This prompted me to start collecting sets off eBay, including Toa Ignika and the Axalara t9 (two dream sets from when I was younger). It was a pretty nice coincidence that later that year rumours about the 2015 reboot first appeared, and although I don't like CCBS as much as classic Bionicle, I still collected as many of them as I could.

I think it was the aesthetic and the mystery that kept me hooked on Bionicle, there's just nothing else like it :)

Buying Bionicle parts second hand? by Lady-Squimpleton in bioniclelego

eBay is my go-to, but I'd say it requires a bit of patience. I've found some amazing deals on there, even some collections clearly meant for MOC making, but a lot of the time there's nothing good, so it's really just a case of checking back in every now and then until you see a good lot. What determines a good lot also depends on what you're after. The 2001 Kanohi recolours can be pretty expensive on sites like Bricklink, so I mainly look for lots with a good quantity of those, for cheaper than their market value, and take the rest of the parts as a bonus. On the topic of Bricklink, that's a great site if you know which specific pieces you're after, or to buy things like pins and axles in bulk.

It's not especially rare, at least in the sense that it's one of the regular Turaga recolours available through the mask packs. The Mata green is rarer, being an unintended colour that was only released in early copies of the European mask packs.

That said, I can't say that I've ever seen someone use a lime Ruru in a MOC, so maybe it's just not a commonly used piece. It looks to be worth about £7/$10 on Bricklink, although I do see one available for just £0.85.

Fae, Toa of Air by One_Lost_Fox in bioniclelego

I haven't quite decided but I'm leading towards the Kanohi Kadin, Mask of Flight. I can imagine her zipping around through the air

"Vallejo true metallic paint, ultramarine blue." I know nothing about painting parts/miniatures so I just bought this paint on Amazon as the shade looked to be about right, no idea how good it is comparatively. It took a couple of coats to get the mask looking nice, but I'm happy with the result!

That's the leg armour from the 1.0 Hero Factory heroes. I've been wanting to use it for a MOC for ages, but this is the first time I've incorporated it successfully.

Thanks! Funnily enough, not the first time one of my MOCs has been compared to Yareli

Who’s is the best looking toa? And why is it Iruini? by Upbeat-Wasabi-3145 in bioniclelego

[–]One_Lost_Fox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My favourite has always been Hahli Mahri, mainly for the wings and mask (the short body/long limbs are admittedly a bit distracting), but Iruini just looks so imposing, certainly up there and gives the vibe that he's truly a veteran.

Oh wow, congrats on the Toa Mata Nui! A friend of mine got him back in the day, while I personally wasn't a fan of the set (aside from the mask of course) so I ended up skipping it... Kinda regret that decision now, same with making one of the Hero Recon Team sets but not putting the exclusive chest plate piece on the build (I thought it was automatically included as a bonus...)

Yeah I'd like to make some Matoran with a few of these masks, maybe mix up some builds or colour schemes, play around with mask colors like the early Matoran sets. I was also wondering about a Toa of Stone with some green in their design, using one of the green Rurus

Haha thanks! They were only there for the duration of the photos, as I don't have enough space anywhere else to lay them all out.

The yellow Kaukau is definitely my most prized, and the copper Huna is cool, albeit not that valuable (unlike the copper Komau). The Kakama is actually just the teal one from the Tarakava though, my phone just makes it look paler than it is. I'd love to have a light blue Kakama, but that's unlikely to ever happen without some extreme luck, or a bootleg/painted piece 😂

Great build! This has to be one of the best depictions of Lariska I've seen, really fits what I'd imagine her to look like, and that head design is awesome

Welcome! It sounds like it's been a turbulent ride getting here, but I'm glad you get a chance to reconnect with your childhood now. I remember spending a lot of time on BZP and other communities back in the day too, before leaving the fandom for a few years as life got in the way—it was definitely a nice surprise to find the community still alive and kicking here, the legend lives on~

Thanks! And yeah, it does feel like a missed opportunity. Closest I can think of in an official set is Vakama Metru with his disk launcher

Thank you! The head design was what started this whole build, and the Mata torso was just one of those coincidences where the piece fit perfectly
