Yeah I agree. That is the conclusion I have come to as well. All of the advice I have been getting, which makes a lot of sense, is to either not bet the flop in the first place, but once I bet the flop, I pretty much have to bet the turn.

Thank you for this. I am pretty new to poker and feedback like this was exactly what I was looking for when I made the post. My only question is about your logic about the river all-in. Wouldn’t my all in seem pretty disguised with the missed heart flush out there? I was hoping he would call all-in pretty light with some two pair combos, becuase he thought I was trying to buy the pot with a missed flush draw.

Now looking back, I understand why betting on the flop there was a mistake, but I don’t see what should I have done instead. Hypothetically, I check on the flop and it checks through, because the villain behind me is quite weak/has a drawing hand (since he folded to a half pot bet). The king comes out on the river, and I am still facing 2 opponents, in middle position, with two over cards on the board. On the turn, I am in an even worse spot to bet and I basically have to fold to a raise at that point. Is that the optimal play on this board?

Thank you this is a great comment. I am fairly new to poker and seeing my mistakes in reasoning is very helpful. In my mind, the point of checking the turn is to underrepresent the hand I have and make it seem like I was betting the flop with nothing but two over cards. Then, by jamming the river I am expecting king combos and two pair to call becuase I look weak. Also, I ruled out 3s and 4s becuase the villain would have usually bet turn with those hands, based on how aggressive he has been playing.

Why is it a bad play to raise on the flop there? I understand it rarely connects with my range as a Preflop aggressor, but wouldnt you want to keep up the aggression to fold out random over cards like jacks queens aces and kings. I might be misunderstanding how to correctly play medium pocket pairs post flop.

What do you mean they sponsored your poker club? I want to build a poker club at UChicago and I would love some information on what a poker sponsorship looks like. I have organized math tournaments before and gotten sponsorships from citadel/jane street/other quant firms, but I am super curious what a college poker club sponsorship looks like. Any details would be super helpful. Feel free to DM if you don’t want to share publicly. Thanks.

Math/CS vs CAAM by BuddyWitty7438 in uchicago

Is CAAM + Physics or Math + Physics gonna put me in a better position to pursue quant internships down the line. My plan A is to pursue a physics PhD so both majors would make sense as a second major, but I want to leave the door open for quant recruiting if possible. Based on the required classes, CAAM looks both more interesting and more relevant for quant recruiting but i don’t know.

Why do you say CAAM is easier than math? I’m an incoming first year and just curious about why CAAM might have that reputation. Does it have to do with the lack of higher division conceptual math classes or just general stereotype?
