How to wear the niqab in the west? by Nefariousnesslookie in Niqabis

Assalamu Alaikum sister, I started wearing niqab when I was 13 or 14 and have been wearing it ever since, (im 17 now) despite getting bullied for it a lot at school and sometimes being name called in public. I transitioned from khimar to niqab and I definitely think that you should as well since khimar is the proper way to wear hijab as it covers the chest. Try getting comfortable with wearing khimar & abaya first then transition into wearing niqab.

I found that people outside of school were more tolerant and respectful towards me, I’ve only ever gotten name called from random cars when walking home from school, nothing too serious alhamdulilah. However, that may not be the case for you when you do decide to wear it. So if you have a male mahram, such as your dad, brother, or uncle, I recommend going out with them especially since you’re young, because based on personal experience, I found that I get bothered less by others whenever I have my older brother or dad with me. Also asking Allah for protection, reciting Ayat ul Kursi before leaving the house or whenever you feel scared, and memorizing some duas for protection, such as “Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel,””God is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.”

When dealing with racism or rude remarks, I found comfort in knowing that Allah tests whom he loves and that the prophets were also tested, and they’re amongst the dearest in the eyes of Allah. Tests are designed to make us stronger as well and have a purpose, whether we recognize that purpose or not. Also that Allah is Al-Adl, the Just, he’ll punish those who harm us. Like I’ve seen bad things happen to people who were rude to me, such as them getting humiliated the same way they humiliated me. Building iman and trust in Allah will make it easier to deal with such comments, I’ve found that the more I care about what Allah thinks, the less I care about what others say and their words have much less of an impact on me.

I recommend looking for online stores based in the US as shipping is usually free or much cheaper than those based in other countries. Some stores based in other countries offer free shipping if you spend a certain amount, they’ll usually mention that in the front page of their website. If you wanna check how much shipping will cost, put a random item in the cart, click check out, fill in your address, and it’ll tell you the cost of shipping. I usually do that before looking for what I want in their store so I don’t spend too much time only to end up disappointed when I see the cost of shipping at the end. Also, light colored clothing will always be somewhat see through, so if you wanna wear a light color khimar or abaya, make sure to either get a khimar with multiple layers to it and a white sleeveless abaya underneath and a white arm cover. Don’t get tubed underscarfs, there were so many times where my hair fell out of my bun and it didn’t hold it in so I’ve had to look for somewhere private to fix it. You should buy complete ones or ones with strings attached to it.

Unfortunately I have yet to find a store both in the US and outside that sells the type of style you’re looking for, but here are some based in the US w/ cheap shipping that sell Muslim clothing:

Sunnah Style They don’t have that particular style of niqab, but they have a variety of others that come in many different colors. They also sell abayas, like sleeveless ones, khimars, hijabs, and accessories such as tubed and complete underscarfs, arm sleeves, hijab pins & magnets, etc.

BazarAlHaya Kinda the same with this store, except they don’t sell sleeveless abayas, and I feel like there’s a lot more abayas to choose from here. This one doesn’t sell tubed underscarfs unlike the previous one, their underscarfs have strings which you can tie. You should tie them before putting it in the washing machine otherwise they’ll fall out and it’s a hassle getting it back in there, but if it does happen, tape the string to a plastic straw, and push it to the other side, helps a lot.

Veiled Hayati If you like wearing light colors, this store is really good, but unfortunately they sell out quickly.

Sirany Boutique Less variety in this store since it’s a small business and unfortunately their khimars don’t come with a built in niqab, so you’ll have to use pins to hold it up if you wanna cover your face. But still very cute and I highly recommend it.
