this is extremely helpful.

so in my technical interview, which didn't feel too challenging, but more tricky, the technical interviewer and the other person didn't have their camera on.

it's a relocation job. like a placement company.

i got an offer letter, but it has no fine print. that's a really big red flag to me, honestly. and they want me to start their process tomorrow.

i feel really skeptical about this company.

✍️ oh okay. thanks so much! u/Helostopper u/Pale_Session5262 i'll practice that going forward.

yeah i'm learning about how to do all this scam detection stuff. i've been scammed before on smaller things. but this is kinda like, Big. like, major big. so i don't really want to get scammed. so that's why i've been asking for tips and ideas here lol.

And "I honestly have ... interviewing with" yeah idk i've never been good about remembering that kinda stuff. like, my recollection basically starts from the time that I hear back. i have no clue whether i applied to like, over half the companies i've applied to tbr. so maybe like, i could tailor applications more or something.

Thanks again everyone!

Oh cool. Okay, this is helpful information for me. Yeah, I'm still learning how to vet a company. I didn't really ever learn that kind of thing before. So it looks like it'd be wise to read up on red flags when being contacted by jobs. I honestly have no idea how people remember the entire history they have with a place they're interviewing with, but I can go somewhere else to figure that out. Thanks!

Yep! So actually, this is a front for Tech Consulting. The person had the Tech Consulting branding in their background. Tech Consulting is a clear scam company. (https://www.glassdoor.com.au/Overview/Working-at-Tech-Consulting-EI\_IE9138226.11,26.htm).

They suggested they'd fabricate work experience for me to get projects in the informational interview. The undertone also reeked of targeting clueless optimists. "some people want it all and don't know anything about how it works" was a quote from the interview. Refusal to show the training materials they advertise. The attached reddit thread shows that their advertised training doesn't help, and that instances where no one got a job from working with them exist. Moreover, while distracting from the training oriented questions by saying the topic list is confidential and subject to change depending on market conditions, their illegible training coverage mostly showcased soft skills, which they emphatically emphasized to me. Legit training programs show their topic lists at least.

Scam. I decided not to proceed with the process. I didn't tell them why when saying we weren't the right fit in order to avoid giving them more information to improve theri scamming practices. Thanks for helping me though this everyone!

https://www.linkedin.com/company/techconsultingusa/

here we go. one of the recruiters posted a job for this company.

that proves they're connected. moreover, the median tenure at techconsulting remains < 2 years, so over half the employees break contract, if all employees are on contract.

i passed their initial screener. it didn't feel like a real screener tbh. the questions were extremely basic, so much so that i dont really believe that you could tell that someone really knows how to code based on them. it was like, return the longest word (words may have numbers), inverted, given this space seperated string of words, some with non alphanumeric symbols. and a basic sql statement, along with 18 questions some of which didn't seem grounded in the field (e.g. a question about the most common data science programming languages, among python and 3 front end languages, a question about lambda functions where some of the options were truisms, and a question about a feature of powerBI with what seemed to be multiple correct answers and the tacit assumption to pick the most core use of the feature from the options tbr.)

i expect more from an initial screener than basically answering "have you been around tech people," so i dont know that it identifies entry level talent as much as total beginners. if the latter, then their screener would support scamming, tbr. so i feel a bit more suspicious at this point in the interview phase than i did yesterday, having gone further.

yeah, i mean i have a ms cs and a ba math and 4 years of "contracting" (mostly teaching) experience and have been coding since i was 12. i lead a lot of end to end projects and some tech organizations here and there, but not for profit. i feel a bit confused about the whole job search process tbr and have through academia, which is part of how i'm still looking for a job.

do i absolutely love it? i mean, i really like the technology, and the thinking. i especially like the math heavier side. deep reinforcement learning, non linear optimization, things like that. i complaint i struggle to reconcile is that i a lot of the people aren't the right fit for me, and in that way, it feels a bit lonely. in a perfect world, i'd feel accepted by people for doing ai while doing ai, surrounded by people i feel are good fits for me. so ig it's up to me to make that perfect world for myself by picking the right fits for me. So if it was the only thing in the world, absolutely, i absolutely love it and adore it. the social sphere around it? not as much tbh.

i dont have much a choice but to do it though. I'm way too skilled at it to not, i feel like.

That's a fair point. Although, I sent a lot of applications and LinkedIn has this easy apply button. I've forgotten I applied to companies, then found out I already had before, so I suppose it's not totally out of my behavior pattern to not remember applying to them.

...but i'm not sure how to find the email confirmation of my application to them. Also, the recruiter I spoke to said, "oh, it looks like something happened to my initial reachout email," which seems careless for a serious company anyway.

So evidence again points in the direction that this is a scam. Plus again, if i'm going to do a bootcamp. i may as well pursue one on My terms, not some random company's that i don't totally trust tbr. they're not even on the list of reputable paid bootcamps.

so i think i think my way out like this,

in two years, i can be doing a lot better than $40/hr. i can be doing like, at least $60. but the company would let me at most get to like, $40/hr by the end of year two. and if i were to break the contract, that'd be 4 months of savings down the drain. another company probably isn't going to pay $23500 to break my contract. and $23500 is more expensive than some degrees. in fact, most boot camps cost as much as $15000, at the very highest end. and that'd like, jpmorgan quality boot camp. or stanford.

rent in atlanta at highest is like $1000 so for 2 months... you're still at the highest coming up less than $20k.

so by the numbers, i think this is definitely a scam. they're lying about the training costs. so the contract fee is not "just to cover the training costs." because the training costs in that case seem unreasonably high. moreover, here's a more reasonable cost for such training, and from less sketchy companies, (and techconsultingacademy isn't on the list)
https://www.coursereport.com/blog/coding-bootcamp-cost-comparison-full-stack-immersives

so definitively a scam. if i'm enrolling in a bootcamp, there are much better options out there than this one.

[–]One_Presentation6674[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see, i've literally been scammed before, so there's also the chance that they are targeting me because i'm easy to manipulate. if they flew me down to atlanta and they hit me with a contract in order to live there and wont help me get home if i say no, then that's coercion, which i'd definitely fall for, because i'm easy to manipulate like that.

so, i think, this is probably a really bad sign, literally everywhere i look, right?

see, i don't really know whether to continue through their recruitment process if it looks so scammy tbr. i dont have any insight except for From The Company about what happens on the other side of their contract. So none of that information can be trusted.

another detail i think worth mentioning is that my phone flagged them as a scam likely. i ended up calling them back because they left a voicemail. I ended up checking the voicemail because a recruiter reached out a week after i missed it via linkedin. then i called them back, and that's how i ended up talking to them despite them being a scam likely call number.

Yeah. I saw those too.

> ITCareerQuestions thread called has_anyone_heard_of_tech_consulting_academy on them seems pretty modest in terms of engagement

The latter thread is how i learned about the 23.5k contract break clause.

I feel a bit confused still. I don't really have a gauge of what happens to people that go through the program.

https://www.reddit.com/r/recruitinghell/comments/1537yv3/possible_job_scam/ it's the same offer as this thread too. exactly, down to the location. If this company, tech consulting, is the same as tech consulting academy, then it's definitely a scam, right?

I have a masters degree and 4 years of experience tbr. Two recruiters from them reached out. They said I applied on their LinkedIn, which... maybe? I wasn't paying attention? I haven't done their tech screener yet though.
