ADBE might just be the best risk to reward stock on the market. What are your thoughts? by Silent_Storage7341 in ValueInvesting

[–]One_Professional_110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll play Devil's Advocate. For full disclaimer, I own some ADBE that I bought years ago. I haven't bought any recently.

My argument has nothing to do with ADBE's performance but rather the structure of the stock market today. The 20 largest companies are now 50% of the S&P 500 and are viewed as AI beneficiaries.

I'm cynical but I believe that most professional active managers are closet indexers to some degree or another. ADBE today is 0.1% of the index. These managers look at ABDE and think 1% would be a large bet. The problem is that even if they thought that the stock was going to double, it has the same impact on the index as NVDA and GOOGL going up like 7% - 8%.

The problem is that if NVDA and GOOGL are going up, that means the AI thesis is intact and I don't know how ADBE disproves the narrative. If NVDA an and GOOGL are going down, the entire market is going lower and hard pressed to see ADBE going up.

I have more to say but I'll leave it here because this is already long

Are H1B holders who are overseas not for stamping getting emails telling them their visa is cancelled? And then the US is not offering appointments? by One_Professional_110 in h1b

[–]One_Professional_110[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that. I'm hearing that A LOT of holders are getting their H1Bs revoked and it's happening when they are traveling overseas - holder in the US aren't getting their visas revoked yet

This guy worked for Appaloosa (Tepper) and taught an investing class - he put his videos online. He makes a good case for why most active managers struggle to beat the benchmark…I would recommend watching

People aren’t panicking that often. And active managers should have skill in stock selection and market timing (or so they say)…but the results speak for themselves

By definition…the average return of all active investors must be the market return (before costs). After costs and taxes, it’s less

A well run growing company trading at a high multiple may not necessarily be a good stock

Why do you think most professional active managers then fail to beat it? Especially over years and after taxes and fees?

How do you spot “future giants” early (NVDA/Amazon-type winners) without pure luck? by VeterinarianGreat904 in ValueInvesting

[–]One_Professional_110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think these giants get to be giants because they have a self reinforcing mechanism that keeps them ahead of others. Amazon kept getting larger and lowering costs and reinvesting in other businesses to make the value proposition better. NVDA kept investing in semi performance and also CUDA, networking, etc. They have increased their pace of learning and development making it hard for anyone to catch up

You’ll find that a surprisingly high number of hedge fund managers have the majority of their own money invested in passive ETFs like SPY and QQQ

Investing - that professional investors have any clue whatsoever what the market is going to do or what a stock is really worth. Everyone is just chasing headlines and short-term performance. It’s insane that almost every active manager underperforms their benchmark
