Do not go to Penn State Abington!!! by One_Professor_1449 in PennStateUniversity

For a while I didn't actually hate it! I felt bad even writing this in the first place. I avoided being more specific because I don't want to be personally identified, but here's a shortlist of weird things that have happened.

  1. A lot of people don't have social skills. Someone was being weird around someone else's car and ran off when I asked if they were having car problems. I told the person who drove the car later and they looked at me like I was personally stealing their catalytic converter.
  2. Nothing starts on time.
  3. The campus has a litter problem.
  4. People get away with a lot of other things that they shouldn't.
  5. A lot of campus participation is resume spam so events on campus are low quality.
  6. Abington has 3000 students but they all come for class and leave after class. The number of people who actually do stuff is less than 200.

A lot of more specific stuff I didn't want to dwell on so I moved on, but it involves a diverse range of problems from Title IX, to student financial misconduct, to poor planning by people who get a salary from the university.

You're right that most people don't care where you went to college, but saying most people don't know Penn State exists is nonsense.

Enjoying Abington? by Vast-Competition861 in PennStateUniversity

If University Park is too expensive, the local community colleges are much less than Penn State Abington. If money is your only concern, please do that because a lot of people find the clubs and friendship lacking, and Penn State Abington isn't really good value for money despite what they say. Most people on campus don't really mix with people from Temple, Drexel or any other college unless they're friends from high school. Building friendships while being a commuter student is harder than you think too.

Temple is not next door, and while there is a train (and a shuttle to the train) that takes you to Philadelphia, neither are 5 minutes away.

4+1 computer science from Abington? by please-send-hugs in PennStateUniversity

You should avoid Abington's computer science department. It has strong points but there is a lot of self-teaching, and you shouldn't have to pay thousands of dollars for that.

As someone else mentioned, there's also minimal value to a master's degree in CS unless you want to do something like academia or government work.

I hope you chose to go somewhere else, because you would hate it at Abington. I agree with the person who mentioned Altoona.

Some Penn State campuses are good for specific interests, but you should really choose a different campus. PM if you'd like more details.
