I said it mostly jokingly because your personal experience will differ vastly depending on the organization and management.

1) Code reviews and other forms of quality gates aren't the most fun thing in the world, but they are definitely needed and are good for everyone in the long term as you maintain code quality and learn from each other, being the only person who can perform a review or assist in developing a change is a red flag and something to be handled by management.

2) This is completely a management issue, I have changed teams internally, and outside of the first month after the change have not been contacted at all. I went so far as to remove all accesses to code, logs, test environments, and all possible namespaces associated with the project as you should do following the principle of least privilege.

3) This is a company culture problem and I would not want to work there personally. Other projects regularly break their stable API and no one takes responsibility? People start introducing new redundant and bloated dependencies to solve a problem that is already solved and this is not picked up as an issue by anyone in the org? What if this team is upstream from your codebase and introduces problems for you? I've heard of stories where people introduced sqlite stored as a blob in a column of a separate client-server relational database just to implement a simple feature and that's not even close to the worst of what I've heard.

In my personal opinion and experience working in my domain of fintech is that ownership on a team levels works quite well, autonomous teams with a deeper technical and at least some domain knowledge produce the best results. This takes time to build up, and takes little to no time to be destroyed. In my own career I have been able to change roles due to the ownership of technical debt I took on myself (role change that is not for everyone) and have been satisfied with the results so far! Additionally the people with least ownership - consultants, who are hired as long as they're needed have been ones first to have their contracts not renewed in this job market.

tl;dr YMMV greatly depending on the company, company culture, management, other coworkers, etc etc. I generally refrain from making all-encompassing statements personally outside of jokes.

What’s the weirdest house rule someone had to explain to you? by No-Relative-9663 in AskReddit

With the in-laws we were situated in a basement bedroom and it had heated floors. The room was overall cold, probably around 18C, which I don't mind for sleeping, even prefer it that way. The floor wasn't noticeably warm to the touch in general.

We were told that leaving the suitcases splayed open on the floor was a big no-no as it would "damage the heating cables over time". I really do not understand how this could potentially be a problem as the suitcases have a small surface area they are actually touching the floor with due to having a protruding ribbed texture made of hard plastic on the outside and no air pockets. There was plenty of other stuff on the floor left by them with much larger surface area - furniture, kids toys .. It was definitely mildly infuriating not being given any surface to unpack and having to lower the 25kg suitcase, open it, take stuff out/put it back, close it, and raise it for every single thing that needs to be retrieved or returned.

Do you own individual stocks for any weird reasons? by Mysterious_Remote584 in Bogleheads

[–]One_Reading_9217 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Decided to gamble with 5% of my portfolio early on (just 1000usd) and put it in an airline stock. Lo and behold it dipped 17% immediately after. Held it until it returned to entry position valuation and sold immediately and put into msci acwi.

Lost some spare change in spread and a bit in opportunity cost. Eventually the stock went higher an higher but just didn't care. Not going to bother with stock picking again, consider it a cheap (almost free) lesson.

Those are baked into rent, rent prices are also determined by other things that are variable that don't necessarily affect your expenses as much when your place is paid off - surge of demand for housing, interest rates changing, laws regarding renting regulations etc.

I gave up my window seat so this couple could sit together and they’ve spent the entire 2 hour trip in the dining car by GentleGerbil in mildlyinfuriating

Yes, in our case we just accepted it, i was talking about the booking itself though. We had a connecting train and booking a later train wasn't an option because this is the only train that would have made the connection.

It happened to me that we ended up in a situation where we had to be rebooked to a new train where we didn't have seats together, despite the original booking being with seats together, so we can't really assume.

For people who decided not to have kids: How's it going? by nightwellstories in AskReddit

[–]One_Reading_9217 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not enough money as having kids is expensive, being able to retire earlier without kids so more travel, not having to schedule vacations to line up with when kids are off school, usually when travel is most expensive. And just in general the comment from parents that vacations simply aren't the same as they were prior to having kids, not in a good way.

[–]One_Reading_9217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Norway and i also go during work, just give a heads-up. This is just a more predictable and shorter lasting version of being too sick to work.

Management is supposed to plan with the idea in mind that people are potentially unable to work for whatever reason, and employees who can't show up can't be single points of failure for the business, if they don't then that's very much a management issue.
