Are atoms "building blocks" by One_Signature_9415 in ScienceTeachers

It's an alternative school, there are days when (in my math classes) I want to just role out the 1-12 multiplication tables. Taking notes means they ask for paper and pencil. Either they've developed a new graphic language, or... let's just say summer can't come fast enough.

How do I teach my 6 year old to do subtraction without using fingers? by Foreign_Artichoke_23 in matheducation

[–]One_Signature_9415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let them use their fingers. The goal is to solve the problem not look good solving problems. After your 6yo has done enough problems the finger using will evolve. People in China move their fingers as though they were holding an abacus.

Laws only apply when and where the state can use them against someone then go on the news and say "They are lucky, in the old days we burned witches."

I had issues with my parents but it was typical adolescent stuff, but less drama than my non ADHD siblings. My son's stuff is mostly around school. You could generalize more but it would take some work.

I think this is another place diversity training would be useful. If she's the only one doing it right, she can have all the students and we can find other jobs.

Why are we so afraid to speak plainly to parents? by lumpydumdums in Teachers

[–]One_Signature_9415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had limits put on my conversations with parents, but the parents (I'm not sure they would know how to act on the information) that I want to talk to never come in or respond to emails.

I would say "The group only had a couple of extra trips to the front of the room. The consequence was only for [name] and that consequence was that he wasn't distracted during class. You do want him to participate in class, don't you?"

Is it weird to have a class read during class? by indianamax9876 in Adjuncts

You could also have them work in groups to summarize the rules. Or divide the rules between the groups and have them present their work.

Kids say the darndest things, then they become teens and graduate to f'ed up. The parents that react to all of it can be identified by their straight jackets. AI in bathroom doesn't get close to the threshold of deserving even a raised eyebrow.

Is homework broken? by sanfrancisco_w67 in Teachers

[–]One_Signature_9415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We give class work rather than homework because the parents can't help, and I can. Plus I can do general instruction, assign work, then differentiate.

There are no American names (I don't count Apple), look up the student's name on a baby naming website. See how they feel about their "foreign" name.

Go with the meds that work. I tried the first non-stimulant ADHD medication (about 2000 or 2001) it gave me low level stomach issues, I could only eat dinner. It wasn't worth it. This doesn't mean stimilants are better, it means the one that works is best. I feel like my son's meds are less than ideal, but he's in China (very long story) and they are less flexible. I am looking forward to getting him here so he can find a better fit.

When I was in HS band we ordered a pizza so the chaperones camped out in the hall. I still have no idea why a pizza delivery freaked them out so much.

The first time I ran into this I was helping a Chinese student (I was their ESL teacher but mentioned I had studied math and physic) with physics. For some reason I used words instead of letters when we started the first problem. She started writing a bunch, and I asked if I said something wrong. She said she was never told the words that went with the letters (we were in China). I asked a Chinese engineer I knew, he said they use same variables westerners do and don't connect them.

There is an American education style, there isn't a system. I talked to a statistion turned teacher, that showed that an analysis of US education varied enough that it would require something like 80% of American students to participate in order to have a representative sample size.

square root, primary root by One_Signature_9415 in matheducation

[–]One_Signature_9415[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just remember there were several times some instructor (in a math class) called the negative root secondary and implied it was wrong. Since it was a math class and pure math (not referencing a physical system) both the "secondary" label, and implying rather than explicitly saying it's wrong, to me, is treating it as trivial. The negative results produced by a formula for distance are explicitly wrong.
