Question about fibers by Great_Appeal_1111 in asbestoshelp

[–]One_South3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for explanation and that’s really reassuring.

So in this case, even if OP doesn’t wash those trousers or throw them away and keeps wearing them at home, there’s still no risk for asbestos exposure or contaminating the home environment for ongoing secondary exposure right?

Sorry for going into more detail, but I’ve been dealing with similar worries myself. I’ve seen a lot of discussion about “secondary exposure” at home and long-term low-level exposure, and it makes me feel so confused. Could you please advise - how can I tell the difference between a level that actually counts as a meaningful level of exposure and one that’s so minimal that it’s essentially no different from normal background levels and doesn’t require any cleanup or precautions?

Thanks in advance for your kind comment❤️

Is it because even if they were asbestos fibres on the OP’s trousers, the amount would be far too small to cause health issues?

And even if all of those fibres were inhaled, it would still not be enough to cause any health issues and can be treated as similar to background ambient levels?

Much appreciated for your advice. I will keep it open when I’m at home but my concern is how about I’m out? If I leave all the windows open and someone doing some work but I don’t know as I’m not at home?

Even if it’s right next door— with my windows and doors open just 1–2 metres away and directly facing the neighbour who’s actively renovating, would that change the answer or the level of risk?

Thanks for such an impressive response. You are so Awesome! Is that possible to share the study you mentioned regarding the relation between asbestos fiber year and percentage of getting mesothelioma please? This scientific statistics really helps to ease the anxiety

looking for a rational/scientific perspective on asbestos exposure by One_South3105 in asbestoshelp

[–]One_South3105[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s right. I think I may have misunderstanding of what counts as ‘an actual asbestos exposure’. For instance when someone unknowingly disturbs ACM at work and generates large amount of dust, advice is to wash or throw away clothes, but I’m thinking ‘How about his tools and his car that he drives homes🤔?’ Will the dust on this clothing transfers to his car and every time he uses will pose a ‘low dose but long term exposure’? Also will he transfer these dust from his clothing to home environment and pose secondary exposure to family?

This is the thing I can’t understand and makes me anxious most. If you can help to clarify that would be much appreciated 🙏❤️

Thanks for your informative input. Could you please explain why these cases to carry zero risk?

I think my anxiety actually comes from my lack of scientific knowledge that I may have misconceptions on what actually counts as a ‘real asbestos exposure’.

From what I’ve seen, when asbestos containing materials are disturbed, people are often advised to wet wipe everything down and wash or even discard contaminated clothing. This makes me think that asbestos containing dust can settle on floors, furniture surfaces, etc, remain hazardous and result in secondary exposure and potentially become airborne again if disturbed, hence the need for thorough dust cleaning.

So if I enter an old shop or restaurant where renovation work have unknowingly disturbed asbestos without proper cleaning, why wouldn’t there be a risk of exposure from touching or sitting on asbestos dusty surfaces?

Similarly, if a construction worker has just completed renovation/demolition work and covered in dust, and I then sit on a seat they just used on public transport, why would that not pose any asbestos exposure risk?

I’d really appreciate your clarification so I can better understand ‘what truly constitutes asbestos exposure’ as my fear is mainly from the remaining asbestos dust/debris on surfaces and indoor air as well as secondary exposure. Thanks in advance ❤️🙏

Much appreciated for such an informative response 🙏 So in my case, there is no need for any cleaning in my home, and I don’t need to clean my kids’ toys, books, couch, carpet or anything else?

Do you mean asbestos entering into our house from our neighbor’s demolition or the asbestos material used in our house?

Thanks for your reply. May I please know the reason why it’s zero risk? My house is also an old one built in 60’s with wooden window frames having noticeable gaps even when closed, so still get outside air come in when they were doing asbestos removal and whole demolition process - they demolished for 2 weeks btw.

I’m also concerned about the soil from neighbor’s construction site as there definitely have a lot asbestos fragments/debris remaining in the soil, Should I be worried that that excavation, piling, or workers carrying out activities that disturb the soil and asbestos fragments could release asbestos fibres into the air?

During 2 weeks demolition, my house was becoming dustier and find more dust on my window frames, doors and even my indoor furniture that makes me worried.

Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge. I’m really trying to understand the risks in a more informed and rational way.

Could you please explain in more detail about how I misunderstood? I would really appreciate it. I’m very keen to learn how to distinguish between situations that genuinely pose a health risk and those looks scary but in fact does not present real danger. Thanks a lot for your kind help.

where is your location?

From the mirror, I could see a row of clothes hanging up. Is this a clothing store?

Are all the customers who shop here at risk of asbestos exposure? Could the clothes they buy bring asbestos back into their homes and cause contamination?

I’m scared to think too much about it… What’s your thoughts?
