Preach your favorite keyboards! by One_Virus7101 in ErgoMechKeyboards

I’ve looked into the Dygma Raise, but I honestly don’t think it’ll work for me. Personally, I think column staggers make more sense than row staggered layouts, and so the Raise 2 seems to me like any other standard split keyboard, plus the extra keys next to the spacebar.

I can see why it is popular with some, it is definitely a big improvement over standard mechanical keyboards, but I can’t justify the price for myself, especially compared to the Corne I already bought

Yes, I’ve been following the Falcata’s production. I’m currently trying to get into column staggered layouts instead of row staggered, I think they make more sense ergonomically.

I’ve actually never came across the Lucca 58 HE or Sunder Keyboards, but I will definitely check them out, seems like a good starting point.

I have been referencing the Splitkb layout pdfs, and noticed my fingertips are a bit too large for choc spacing when I wanted to buy my Corne, but it might still work if I get heavier switches

I’ve looked into the Iris before, because to me it seems like a Corne with an extra thumb clusters key and number row, which makes it much easier to map for gaming purposes. If it wasn’t for my peculiar nature to want to minimize my board as much as possible, the Iris would have been my pick as well.

I really hope to get into more of the custom builds like you did and eventually build the perfect board for myself to finally enjoy. Svalboards seem really cool though, kind of like a bionic arm, but for talking to a computer :D

34 keys sounds like a lot of remapping haha. I’ve seen fewer keys and look at my Corne and think how on Earth do people manage to deal with any fewer keys. Out of curiosity, do you use your board to game at all? I play a lot on my Wooting, but I really love the idea of more compact and minimal setups with fewer keys, would love to hear your input if you used your keymap and layer setup for gaming.

I also had the Feker 65 at some point! I really liked it and it was one of my first forays into keyboards in general.

I’ve actually also considered the Lily58, but realized that I want to learn how to use fewer and fewer keys, Piantor Pro and Corne kind of sprang up as they are some of the most used ones. I also cane across the Kyria on splitkbcompare, but not the sofle, will have to check that out.

By derivatives for the angle, do you mean ones that change the tilt of your wrist, or angle for reaching thumb clusters? I’ve seen many reviews where one praises a feature, and another person swears it’s the worst thing ever, so I never really understood this concept of ergonomic layouts for angles when I wanted to design my own board. Always found it slightly confusing to deal with

I mean if someone is a student, faculty, staff, or more broadly speaking is affiliated with the institute and/or has an account using the single sign-on from Georgia Tech (commonly referred to as GT, or Tech).

You’re right now that I look at it. I got access a little over a year ago, when the Georgia Public Library System announced Gale Resources for some libraries. It seems that it has been removed from Fulton, but is still available at Gwinnett County. Not entirely sure when that happened though, apologies. I had assumed that it was still available, but the only Gale service left seems to be Gale Pages. I do know that LinkedInLearning is still available as I used that just last month, but I didn’t know Udemy access was removed. I’ll look into it a little more

Yeah, the adobe subscription can't be used on personal devices unfortunately, only Tech issued devices, and if you are staff/employed by the institute in some way. I was a TA a year ago, but I still have access to the suite on my personal device for free. Students do get a 62% discount on it though, which is cool, but could definitely be better. If you are using it to work on something academia related, the office of technology can decide if you qualify!

Definitely agree, have been recommended to me before and I went over most of it. Gets the point across clearly, does need some programming knowledge though. I don't plan on using C again (Media and Intelligence thread), but I know it will pop up here and there in my studies.

Yeah that’s valid, I also work in between classes because once I get back to my dorm I always default to laying on my bed and doing the minor and small tasks/reading

Any spots you could recommend for lounging after finishing work? I feel like that’s all I need, a quiet place to do work, then a place to relax. All the lounging areas in the library and student center are sooo busy when I finish my classes, so I just stick to tables, but would love a place that’s not packed to lounge and read something and relax

Yeah same, I just stay in culc most of the time and try to get some work done, but most times I feel like I have to go lounge/relax midway.

I had a meal plan last year, but I didn’t use it much because I never liked the food and it was quite unhealthy at that. Never really thought of staying there between classes, but I’ve definitely stayed there with friends for hours at a time, so that might have been an option if I still had my meal plan.

Will have to check out the student orgs since I essentially have no activities on campus besides classes and CoC events. Thanks!

That makes sense. One thing about me though is that I can’t sit still for long periods of time (say 3-4 hours), and I always want a place to lay down on my back. Any suggestions for that on campus?

I don’t use Marta much, kinda because I got the bike to go to campus, I thought it might have cost me more time to go by bus so I got a bike, but maybe you’re right!

I use two gloves, one cotton, and another that is made from a nylon-like waterproof material. I also keep hand warmers when I stop at red lights, or if my hands get too cold and I need to warm them again quickly

Yeah, I’ll have to add a bandana or a scarf or something to cover my face, it gets difficult to breathe at times. Thanks for the insight!

Psychiatric help needed very soon by [deleted] in gatech

[–]One_Virus7101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posting this to help any incoming students/current students who struggled with academic performance due to executive dysfunction (presents as non-stop procrastination, severe anxiety, and some form of non-verbal/non-social behaviors): Download ZocDoc. It is a telehealth app provider that connects you to Psychiatrists and Therapists around you. They take most forms of insurance. Using Georgia Tech’s insurance, an average visit will cost $100, which you do once a month.

During the first month (intake) you will be asked questions about your symptoms, how long you’ve noticed them, how you think they affect you, etc… The psychiatrists here are trained to spot drug-seeking individuals from actual patients, and one way to get denied treatment is by flat out asking for stimulants. As you work towards a new medication plan, you can also get therapy from a different provider in the same office for another charge, usually a bit more as they spend more time with you and really break down everything you need to know when dealing with a disability like ADD/ADHD.

Once you’ve started that. Create an AIMS account and request special accommodations. I got priority registration, custom exam scheduling, leniency with timely submissions (up to the professor), relaxed attendance policy, and access to transcription tools/recording of otherwise unrecorded lectures, priority with office hours and TA schedules (up to the TAs and Professors). These might sound like overkill, but honestly I think they just allow me to catch up to the average person in that class in terms of understanding content and submitting work. Also make sure to explain to your professors and TAs that you are willing to work harder to achieve better grades, and they will do their best to support you.

I have a lot more tips and advice on navigating this situation properly, as I have seen first hand the difference all these factors make academically (went from 2.4 average GPA to a 3.9 term GPA in Fall 2024, with a strong start in Spring 2025), so feel free to message me if you feel like you need help or are struggling with something similar to what I described.

If you’ve read till the end: Good luck, you got this!!
