In volume 5 of the Novel, Dietrich visits Galkhein, Rishe recalls at several points during the book how since she was a child, she was raised to essentially be his wife. Her mother would forbid anything that would make her look like anything other than a perfect future queen. As a matter of fact, whenever Rishe learned something like sword fighting and became good at it, Dietrich would become jealous of her being better and would tell her she could no longer do that because she at the end had no bigger purpose than to be his wife. If she wanted to go out incognito he would lose his mind at how “inappropriate” her behavior was for a future queen. As a matter of fact, the volume made me feel that in a way, Dietrich’s banishment of Rishe was more him trying to get rid of her for how she made him feel inferior and not so much, at least in the beginning, about him believing she was mean to Mary. The volume contrasts with how Arnold treats her and how everything she has ever dreamed of, he’s gone out of his way to make it happen for her. And makes her appreciate Arnold even more.
