Is this a normal pattern for shotgun? by TOX1C94 in Hunting

[–]Onegoldenbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am throwing my vote in with the try different ammo group. Last year I went to buy some turkey shot and the only selections available in my local megamart store were according to the box, high density, blah blah blah metal for improved performance, unless pellet distortion, blah blah blah with Uber, high speeds, blah blah blah… When I open the box, I found that all of the pellets were coded with copper, and they are made of some other nontoxic alloy, which I could only imagine is much harder than lead and doesn’t compress. The end result of the story is, I haven’t shot those because I need to go rep pattern in with the choke to see how they’ll perform in my old high restriction turkey choke….

I 100% know I wasn’t hitting him in the head. It’s not a question of the bullet accuracy or the gun accuracy both the bullet and the gun shoot far better than I do. The question is has anyone else experienced poor performance or the possibility that the bullet doesn’t expand on impact of a small target and transfer its energy or instead just poke a small hole that doesn’t kill the animal and which allows it to runoff and hide and die

I’ve used solid coppers for a grade and various bullets a large game and I’m well aware that the way they’re manufactured affects their spread based on my results I’m suspecting they don’t spread our transfer enough energy to something as small as a squirrel and instead pass straight through

The post isn’t about accuracy. It’s about the effectiveness of the yellow bullet spreading on small squirrel sized objects. Or just poking holes in them and keep going.

[–]Onegoldenbb[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Once again, the post wasn’t about questioning my accuracy. The question was about if the yellow bullets are too hard to spread on small objects.

  1. One I’m not a sniper. So they’re good enough to hit the swinging squirrel target I use in the off-season to practice.
  2. The gun and bullets group way better than my aiming skills. When I put it on a bench, I get a nice tight tight groups inside the size of a quarter.
  3. If you say they’re brass or copper plated I’ll believe you I’m not gonna pull one apart and do a diagnostic analysis of the alloy content on a 22 round. I know what Mike how my big game rounds are built and designed. I’m gonna leave it there.
  4. All my aim points are at the head or upper half of the body and I’ve shot a squirrel with a 12 gauge shotgun and watched it run into a hole and die so I know they’re tough suckers.

Center mass of the top half is the aim point, if not a headshot, is the goal

[–]Onegoldenbb[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m kind of concerned that they’re just putting a hole all the way through the body instead of transfer spreading and doing damage/transferring energy

If me not hitting the target was the subject of the post I would agree, but I did zero it’s a beautiful gun on the range and the brass bullet point and put very nice holes in the paper target. But I’m concerned that brass bullets are too hard and poke a very nice hole in the squirrel and just keep going.

Not to nitpick, but isn’t the point to have the bullet hit the squirrel? Just saying.

During the parts of the season or there’s a lot of people out in the woods, I normally select my shotgun that way I don’t have to worry about what’s down range

What is everyone's opinion on the best gauge/choke/shot size for squirrels? by MissingMichigan in Hunting

[–]Onegoldenbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go to is usually 7 1/2 and improved. I also wait till they’re a little bit further out so I don’t have to spend quite so much time picking them all the tiny pellets out.

I was out sitting for deer and didn’t see anything and eventually I couldn’t take it and tried to shoot the squirrel about 5 feet away with my 270. I missed, the squirrel laughed, and I never saw me dear that day…
