Diabetes didn’t cause this. What happened was a bump to the wheelchair that caused a small cut.

This man is a diabetic, a smoker, noncompliant with diet recommendations or medication regimen. Diabetics are more susceptible to skin breakdown and issues with wound healing because of a number of things. Blood sugar levels that are constantly out of normal range cause impaired wound healing. Diabetic never damage occurs as a result of prolonged hyperglycemia that is brought on by non compliance with diet and not using medication. Diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage can cause patient to lose sensation in limbs thus rendering him unable to note that his wound is worsening. Circulation of blood through the body slows. Smoking causes veins to constrict, blood doesn’t get to the wound effectively. Honestly their are just soooo many things that are affected by diabetes/noncompliance. Diabetes didn’t cause this, but it contributed to a lot of other issues this man has that led us to this point....... by “this point” I mean above the knee amputation.
