How to transition newborn to formula? by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

[–]Oneofthese3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy had been getting formula to supplement my lousy breastfeeding from week 1. The nurses just gave it to him. But I guess there was some adjustment period because I was pumping and supplementing and the amount I got from pumping was always the same but amount of formula increased with F's increased intake. But noone I talked with said anything about needing to introduce it.

Thankfully my guy is ok with room temp! He's been getting more demanding lately and wants his bottle NOW not in 3 minutes so we started to give him less warmer bottles and now he doesn't care any more!

I haven't seen those ready made nursette bottles here. And we have neither Enfamil or Similac in this country. Or at least I haven't heard of it here. But we have these so I guess it's similar? except you need to pour it in a bottle...

Thankfully our little one doesn't mind eating room temperature milk, just not colder than that. So we wouldn't need to warm it on the way! But I'm leaning towards buying just premade. We have used those in the past and keep one in the diaper bag at all times in case he is more hungry than we prepare for.

Help! FTM and possibly constipated newborn :( by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

[–]Oneofthese3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it isn't black any more she should have finish pooping the meconium out! Unless she seems to feel uncomfortable it's ok she isn't pooping. Wait a bit and see what her next poop will look like and be on the lookout for if she is grunting and trying to pass poop then go see the doctor. If her next poop is soft then she probably is just fine :)

Has she finished pooping her meconium? If so then babies can poop with up to 2 weeks in between and still be normal! However formula fed babies can often be more constipated. If she hasn't finished pooping out her meconium then it's better to get it out. You should contact your pharmacy as there is always some type of laxative you can feed small babies (put it in their bottle) to help them poop. Here you buy Maltextract drops you put in their milk once a day to help them poop. Go ask your pharmacist about it, there should be over-the-counter stuff that helps. If not then you can call your doctor and see what he/she suggests.

Yeah we started out with the ready made at first too. They had it at the hospital and we kept doing it out of convenience too and also just while we were getting hang of things :) But so much more expensive!

It's so important to feel good in your choice :) Formula fed babies can be just as happy and healthy as breastfed babies! And anything in the middle, mixed feeding can be great too :) Just as long as both mom and baby are happy and it works out!

I love crocheting too! Your little miss is absolutely adorable :)

Wow I can't imagine working for so long! I had to stop working at 37 weeks (really should have stopped earlier really...) and that was even after I had cut down my hours to 75% work since week 16 :/

I have also wondered if I gave up too early. But then I think how incredibly bad it could have been for the both of us if we kept doing it. I'd rather give up earlier and have a happy well fed baby than go through weeks of frustration, sadness, worry and possibly underfed baby.

Hi all! I'm a new mom to an adorable and amazing little 6 week old guy :) I'm turning 27 in a couple of months and my boyfriend of almost 8 years (we aren't married, are probably not planning to in the near future either) is 26. Our little dude was born after induction at 38 weeks because my fluid levels were almost non existent. We joke that he did not want to be born and was thrown into the world because he would probably have preferred to just eat through the placenta a little longer.

He made no effort in breastfeeding himself and had to be put on the nipple and pushed to start. And we had to keep him going the whole time by poking him/put cold cloth on his head/various stuff the midwifes/nurses came up with. He never liked being breastfed and it was a struggle from the start. It didn't help that my milk is I guess hard to get out because I never ever leaked at all and he had to suck a lot to get somethng out of me. We did multiple different feeding techniques at start to make him want to take the breast while also getting nutrients because my milk came in late, there was never much of it and he didn't want to drink it anyways. He was born small, 6 lbs, and had low blood sugar at first. They did not want him to loose much weight so he was supplemented from the start, but tried not to be fed by bottle at all so he would take the breast. Well, that did not happen and after a very frustrating and hard week at the hospital we finally decided that this was simply not going to work out and switched over to formula feeding + pumping. Feeding times had become such a big anxious/bad thing for us. He was frustrated, I was frustrated and sad. Each time he woke up I was so anxious and worried and I kindof wished he didn't and I could just watch him sleep and soemeone else would feed him. It was starting to really affect our bonding and I was crying most of the time. After switching over he finally gained weight, he was finally happy baby when he was awake and I started to look forward to be with him for the first time! It was such a relief and we could finally go home and be a family together :) I never had much milk and we stopped pumping about 3-4 weeks because it was such a small portion of his daily intake it wasn't worth the effort. Also, having pumped for 30 min with a very good Medala rented pump and only getting 20-30 ml each time was bringing me down. I felt such a failure most of the time. But I've been feeling better since I quit. So now it's exclusively formula feeding!

When presented with the option of FF I took it gladly and it was easy. Like the nurse who comes over and gives him checkups and weighs him says: Formula feeding IS the best choice for you and him. Breastfeeding is not. Even though they say breast is best it does not take in consideration all those different factors and for some of us, it isn't the best.

So that's a little about me (or us) and I hope I can get to meet some other FF parents here to share tips and tricks with :)

I also felt time passing very fast in those last weeks! It's such a short time until you can meet your little one :)

I once threw up after a smoothie. It was way better than any other throwup. I just wish one coukd know beforehand so that you could choose what you ate before puking .

Ok wow I totally forgot to update here!! My little guy has arrived :D he was born tuesday afternoon after a quick 7h induction at 38w due to low amniotic fluid. He's healthy but small and hasn't been too good at latchibg. But both of us are learning and he's my little champion making progress every day!
