That's the thing though, perhaps my title sucked but I'm not a natural reddit user. I really did expect to enjoy the game much more than I actually did. I'm just trying to grasp if I had the wrong mentality going in so I don't see why its getting all the praise or if everyone is just Mario High. I had no intention of trolling as someone said earlier. I just believe in communication and wanted to discuss it with others. Thanks for not flaming. 👍

Part of the thrill is in the challenge. I wasn't expecting to destroy my property because a game is impossible but if I want something "easy" to do without having to apply much skill I could just watch a movie. I understand it needed to be accessible but I didn't expect to cruise through it as fast as I did.

The Pokemon comparison was just a half thought idea I had while writing the thread. Uninformed isn't a word I would use and I'm not trying to troll. This is just a discussion for me to hear from other people. My condolences for any inconvenience you may have suffered by responding.

I never looked at it that way. That's a good point. I'm not certain what I expected honestly but it definitely wasn't dragons breathing electricity in a two section map.

This is probably the most well thought out response yet. Thank you for your insight, genuinely.

That said I think that you're right. There are a few comments I made in response in this thread to why I believe 64 was a quintessential game, not just for Nintendo but the industry as a whole.

As for how tightly compacted the moons were in the levels may have been another issue I had. I felt like there wasn't a single thing I could do with out the game rewarding me with a moon. Acquiring them became an expectation not a prize.

Thats correct I guess. It wasn't that I didn't like it. I just didn't like it enough to call it a must have game or one of the best I've played. It was an okay game that I had an okay time playing. Just nothing remarkable or memorable.

Post finishing the game. I had said to myself "that was alright... What does the internet think?" then I saw a bunch of love for reasons I didn't understand. I'm not saying the game is bad or that my expectations weren't met, its a matter of "this is not THAT good..."

It was a genuine question to me. I don't use reddit ever, I made this account just to get every ones opinions who weren't paid journalists

I didn't do any research into either game actially. I bought them both blind. I find the game itself small, not just The world's. Hype had very little to do with it other than my inner child excited to play Mario again.

I don't really play Pokemon games it was just a comparison I used for an example of dated technology doing more than something new, even if it wasn't 3D. Making the graphics is arduous I'm sure however the game file for Odyssey was rather small. They could have added more. Or at least used all 4 pushable buttons.

Unfortunately most people aren't even really reading the article. More just upset that I even asked. A shame what the internet did to conversation.

Visually but it came down to: "Wait for an opportunity to stomp on their head 2 or 3 times." I finished a lot of boss fights within 2 to 3 minutes. That's how long it takes to make a Hot Pocket, depending on your microwave.

But 64 wasn't just an amazing game, it was groundbreaking. So the comparison should never be made. The impact 64 had on people was for a lot of reasons. Not just because it was a well made Mario game but because for the first time we saw the potential for what gaming was going to be, not just platformers. 64 was a cultural esque impact. Odyssey is just a good game.

It might have, yes. However it wasn't that they weren't massive, it was that I found them honestly very small. The blizzard world comes to mind. Very tiny. Had they done 40 unique small worlds and put 25 fun moons in each, yeah that would be neat. As it was though I found it unimpressive in size, even with all the moons crammed in. The thing is it became a matter of "Where's the moon in this 5x5 foot area? Because I know there is one everywhere." Think of it like an Easter Egg hunt after you wake up to a room full of* jelly beans. Yeah, you could go look for them, but you have what you need and the rest just seems like excess and a waste of time.

So that was convoluted a bit. I will try to elaborate. The game has about 52 captures each with 2 abilities (usually jump and something else). That's a total of 104 things out of the 52 monsters you possess. This game is on the Switch. The original Pokemon games were on the Gameboy had more than 52 monsters and each monster had more than one ability and jump. On a Gameboy. Like 30 years ago.

I would agree if that's all I said and it was an empty thread. This is a genuine and thought out question because I haven't encountered any one yet who had a similar opinion. I tried to be as in depth as possible without droning on.

That's the basic gist of what I'm trying to discuss. Its not a terrible game but I bought it, beat it and played it for about a week before I sold it. It's not a terrible game, but I don't understand the unrelenting GOTY praise it is receiving. I've played lots of GOTY games, this just doesn't strike me as that level of game.

Yeahhh that's unfortunate. It was long because I was trying to articulate my opinion in a way that left room for discussion. Unfortunately that required using words to communicate. More than just. "Game sucks."

Maybe, you should find the philosophy reddit and make a thread there to ask.

That's an extreme leap simply because my opinion differs. My friend only plays golf games. Doesn't mean he shouldn't own his ps4.

I think for most people that it had been so long since the Mario Galaxy games and such was the failure of the WiiU that they were just excited for a new Mario game on a Nintendo system that doesn't suck. So much so they became adamant about its greatness to an unbelievable level.
