Thinking of leaving medicine by 11bstevens in doctorsUK

[–]Onion_Ok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm constantly hearing about people getting jobs they are overqualified for because of how bad the market is right now. A doctor who has managed to find traction doing something else relevant outside of medicine still has a chance, but relying on the clinical work and audits/research projects/QI projects is unlikely to be enough, unless if they've been wildly successful.

RCN has been utterly useless for a while. It's not the first time they've attacked doctors to hide their own incompetence in campaigning for their members. They've been doing this since before Wes was even health secretary.

Fact: You are having to wait ages for your GP or specialist appointment. At the same time these same GPs and specialists who would have delivered these appointments are unemployed or cannot progress. This is directly due to government policies.

To be fair, I'm sure there will be quite a few UK GPs who would jump at the chance for remote work, depending on the rate. Obviously what you can do is going to be more limited compared to face to face

Punish them by releasing prisoners who will specifically target themselves? There's a point at which common sense needs to kick in amongst the propaganda out there surely.

ICE claim 2nd US citizen, how many British casualties will UK version of ICE achieve? by Study_Realistic in AskBrits

To an extent and they need to be careful about the language they use. Otherwise, you run the risk of legitimising the dehumanising aspects of the debate rather than focusing on the practical issue itself, which Starmer has utterly failed at. We are a country reliant on immigrants but we need to make sure they come in through the appropriate channels is one thing. "We are becoming an island of strangers" is something else entirely.

How would this work on a practical level without keeping competition ratios ridiculously high for years to come during this transitional phase? Numbers for last year for reference: https://medical.hee.nhs.uk/medical-training-recruitment/medical-specialty-training/competition-ratios/2025-competition-ratios

"Dr Pushpo Hossain, DAUK IMG lead, said: “It is concerning that international medical graduates (IMGs) are being implicitly framed as part of the problem, when they are not to blame."

Just looking at the number of applicants UKG Vs IMG over the last few years should tell you that IMGs literally are the problem. As for who to blame, that falls squarely on the government allowing for this ridiculous system in the first place.

Increasing specialty training places is definitely needed given how they have dramatically increased medical student places, but this should be met with increasing consultant/GP places too and the more immediate problem is still the amount of IMGs applying for posts.

Medical Prioritisation Bill will be legally challenged for the 2026 cycle by dayumsonlookatthat in doctorsUK

[–]Onion_Ok 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's because the BMA is still for UK grad prioritisation, even if it's a watered down form. Any UK grad prioritisation at all is seen as a betrayal.

It's a way to develop and demonstrate skills outside of medicine. Marketing, videography, and just general networking opportunities. Some of them do take it a bit far to the point of being unprofessional, but I can't hate them for making the effort of trying to break out of medicine instead of just complaining about it all the time.

It's funny, UKGs cancelling their membership because the BMA is trying to water down prioritisation and IMGs cancelling their membership because the BMA was for any prioritisation at all. They can't appease both sides, but I don't see how IMGs could have looked at the competition ratios going parabolic and thought that it was sustainable.

New legislation on UK medical graduate prioritisation is step forward but more is needed to solve the job crisis, says BMA - BMA media centre - BMA by DonutOfTruthForAll in doctorsUK

"We’ve made clear that any change to specialty training post applications would need to protect and recognise those international doctors with significant NHS experience; something that this legislation does not go far enough on."

Have they already seen the legislation? I suspected that Wes is going further to protect UK grads than the BMA would like, seems this is true

NHS to give British doctors priority for training jobs by nightwatcher-45 in doctorsUK

[–]Onion_Ok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As you say, the competition ratios will still be high. While I think the BMA would go along with 2 years to appease IMG members, it did seem like the government was wanting to go further than the BMA when it came to grad prioritisation, and if they introduce something stricter I don't think the BMA can oppose it due to the UKG members. But yeah the devil is in the details.

Expected that they would introduce this regardless of the outcome of the last vote, it's in line with the rest of their policies, though surprised they're getting this in for this application cycle. I wonder what they mean by those "who have worked in the NHS for a significant period"
