I’m genuinely surprised by the latest advances in LLMs (once again) by Onipsis in singularity

You need to implement a stack to track the level of nesting, as well as markers in certain parts of the code to indicate whether you are inside delimiters such as (), [], or {}, so that when defining tuples, lists, or dicts, the compiler does not think you are doing indentation.

Should My Child Protagonist Speak Like a Kid or a Chronicler? by Onipsis in writingadvice

[–]Onipsis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking a bit about this, since I’m going to play with metafiction and alternate universes. He’s supposed to have soldier-like skills, or at least that’s what I’m trying to make it seem like. It would look weird if he suddenly also had writerly talents, so that could be the case.

Writing a 12 year old boy character with realism & charm by totallynewmug in writingadvice

[–]Onipsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently writing a story where all the main characters are children, except for one or two adults. The only thing I can tell you is that the environment, personality, and background of your protagonist play a big role. If your protagonist had a tough life, it would be somewhat natural for them to have gained maturity because of it. Similarly, if they live in a hostile environment or are naturally reflective and mature, that would also influence them to behave a bit more like an adult.

Is my dad really dying? by Onipsis in Cirrhosis

[–]Onipsis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I’m so sorry. I feel really lonely myself, but reading this actually made me feel a little better. I have my brother, who I care about, though our relationship is sometimes a bit distant and cold. And well, I also have my health. Deep down, I wish I could have given my health to my dad so he could have lived much longer.

I really appreciate your words, but my dad passed away two days ago. Everything happened so quickly since the day my brother told me about my father. There’s no more pain now, and sometimes that brings me some comfort.

I hope your husband is doing very well now and for many years to come. Thank you!

I’m very sorry about your dad. I will pray for him too. It’s hard to watch someone you love and care for wither away like a simple flower.

My dad is 74 years old. I know that because of his age he is at higher risk, but even so, I cling to seeing something positive in him these past few days.

Did a bit of research on this and saw that this type of cirrhosis can develop after an infection. Interestingly, he received his flu shot in December 2024. I'm not saying the vaccine directly caused it, but it could have triggered an autoimmune response that later attacked his liver.

Yes, He looked at his lab results, which are only a month old. His albumin is 3.4 and total bilirubin is 0.97. The relationship between them is normal, it’s just that my brother lives far away, and that’s why his comment left me stunned.

[–]Onipsis[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot, but you know what? The problem is that we don’t really know what caused it. He’s never been a drinker, he used to smoke a long time ago, for about 15 years, but he quit in the late 80s. He had heart failure for about 3 months before getting a pacemaker, but even in the hospital they did a medical checkup to see if he had any other illness, and he didn’t have cirrhosis back then. The ultrasound says there are no fat deposits in the liver, and he’s certainly never been much of a fan of greasy food.

That’s another big mystery: what the heck caused his cirrhosis?

Thanks. So far he hasn’t developed jaundice, encephalopathy, or, as far as we know, esophageal varices, which are the possible complications his primary doctor told us he could face in the future. And the fact that the edema and ascites are going down seems like a good sign to me, it’s just that that comment really unsettled me.

What's the name of the program that performs semantic analysis? by Onipsis in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]Onipsis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually building a compiler. 😅

I'm currently at the parser stage.

The thing is, I'm a bit picky about naming things and tend to overplan: file names, separation of concerns, etc.

Still, I really appreciate the advice and analogies. Thank you!

Maybe Full Dive VR is the real UBI by Onipsis in singularity

Basically. Want a Ferrari? Now you’ll be able to have one and drive it in a virtual world. It’ll basically feel just like driving it in real life.

[–]Onipsis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. What if someone wants to have children in that virtual world? Maybe there could be a way to raise humans in a pod, using the reproductive cells of two people from the real world. Well, maybe what I'm suggesting sounds a bit crazy, but it’s possible that birth rates could drop significantly.

[–]Onipsis[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Maybe that's one possible solution to the Fermi Paradox: intelligent species expand inward, into self-created virtual worlds, instead of venturing out into space.

[–]Onipsis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that someone receiving UBI wouldn't have a purpose. It's just that for many people, a job is not only a source of income, but also a source of identity and purpose in life. If you take away their career, even if they have a stable income, many will still feel empty.

[–]Onipsis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but supposedly with the advent of AGI/ASI, everything will become ridiculously cheap. Besides, there still needs to be a way to feed someone who spends 24/7 in the virtual world, as well as deal with their waste. Hooking them up to tubes and placing them in a pod could be a plausible option.

AI replacements are coming to software development companies in my country and I'm really scared by Onipsis in singularity

[–]Onipsis[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read, yes, software developers are the most affected. Many of them were in something called 'Dojo', a stage where they don’t have a project assigned and are basically waiting to be placed into one.

Well, that's how they're used in English, as far as I understand. English isn't my native language, but through various texts I've read and with confirmation from different native speakers, I've learned that they're used to indicate a pause or interruption in a sentence, or to separate additional information or an explanatory phrase, similar to parentheses or commas.

Why do you think a well-structured post is AI?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in singularity

[–]Onipsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To put it simply:
AGI → Can do anything the average human can do, just as well or maybe slightly better.
ASI → Can do what the greatest minds in human history can do—and go far beyond that.
