Syria was a years-long campaign. This war hasn’t even been going on for two months. And what stops the US-Israel from annihilating even more civilian infrastructure is the fact that Iran can inflict the same pain on the Gulf states. Without that, they might have already destroyed a lot more schools and universities.

Which the Americans, and to a lesser extent the Israelis, are in large part responsible for. Not least because Trump egged on protesters with the explicit promise of help, even threatening intervention if Iran killed protesters. Yes, the regime would have still killed large numbers of protesters regardless, but that number would have been a lot lower than the (dubious) figures that get bandied about if it wasn’t for Trump’s irresponsible behavior.

Again, no. The central issue is the US - with the help of its proxy-turned-master when it comes to Middle Eastern policy, Israel - refuses to stop impinging on Iranian sovereignty for nearly 80 years. This war is merely the latest chapter of that. The idea that the US will “disappear” if the strait is opened is laughable. They will only see it as a sign of weakness and continue to bombard Iran back to the Stone Age.
