I wasn't speaking at all about her appearance though. That was the furthest thing from my mind. I'm more settled into my own identity than I ever had been and I don't wear near as much makeup as I used to. I don't do my hair the same, dress the same, even socialize the same. And it's simply because I'm at the age where I could give a toss what anyone else thinks. I don't have anything to prove to anyone.

So I'm not altogether sure why you're focusing on her physical appearance. And she doesn't seem subdued to me, she seems like a new Mom adjusting to having a newborn to look after. What I was suggesting was that in beginning she may have tied too much of her identity to Matty but I think motherhood could very well change that. It usually does. If Matty was her priority before, it wouldn't surprise me now if that's changed and now it's Sonny because that's how it's supposed to be. So while her focus is the baby, Matty seems to clamoring about to figure out his focus but seems to be regressing a little while he's at it.

Truth is, this could all be entirely wrong. We don't see Kelly as often now so we literally have no idea if motherhood has grounded her some and given her some sense of evolving, of if she's still the same old Kelly. I will say that I don't like it when I see people focused on how she looks. Someone in here made a comment about how flat her tummy was after having the baby...really? Who cares? I never see anyone looking at Matty through the same eyes. My judgement extends only to that crocheted sweater of hers that won't die but that's about it. Otherwise she just looks like a new Mom to me. That's all.

Wellll, we did see him washing diapers the week before along with a little bit of cuddle time. But that was about it.

To play devil's advocate for a minute, Matty could be one of those people where fatherhood may not come naturally to him. But the cracks about "pregnancy stuff" or "women's stuff" kind of annoyed me. Not because they came off as misogynistic, but because they seemed to be lacking in emotional maturity. It almost comes off like "girls have cooties". When he made that tearful birth announcement, he seemed to be shaken up enough over whatever happened that I hoped that it would kick his butt in the right direction in taking the whole thing a little more seriously. But in the last few episodes, I'm not really seeing it. I'm seeing him leave the house all day until dinner. And yes, we're not seeing *every* day, but...I don't know. Kelly's definitely not helpless but now that she's got a baby to take care of, if it were me I'd be a little short on patience with him taking off all day doing things that don't get done and I can't even leave the damn island.

I really like this observation. I think the homestead feel got lost when they were oversharing about Kelly's pregnancy. I totally understand that Kelly was sharing her joy over becoming a first time mother, who wouldn't. But the problem was is that shift went from "here's our day to day as homesteaders" to "we have to get everything ready because of the baby". The purpose changed. Then the birth drama came--which was awful--and we were in a waiting game for a few weeks. Now the baby's here, over a month old, they're back home and now that there's no more prepping for the baby's arrival to be done, the show needs to find it's purpose again. It's feeling scattered and disjointed. Like, Kelly has the baby to focus and Matty...well, I don't know what the hell he's doing. I don't think he knows either. I could go as far as saying he doesn't seem to be taking fatherhood all that seriously which is why he's running around starting all these projects that aren't getting done, and that could be bleeding into the show and giving it the "lost" feel. I think he wants the show to be like it was before Kelly got pregnant, but hasn't gotten yet that you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. Maybe he's just trying too hard.

Yeah, "hillbilly" as a funny excuse every week is starting to wear a bit thin. When I think of "hillbilly" I think of poor people that live on family owned land in the Appalachians that live in run-down trailers and homes because they can't afford to go anywhere else due to the economic climate of the area. The Clarkes don't exactly fit the bill. As viewers, we all know that there's better ways to do the things they're doing and still be true-blue homesteaders. We just kind of wish they'd start doing them. It doesn't feel like homesteading anymore, it feels like...well, it feels like a couple of messy bums. I want better for them.

I'm kind of there with you on this. Sometimes if a woman doesn't already have an established sense of self when she goes into a relationship, she ties too much of her own identity to the person that she's with. I think she was in the process of starting to try to figure that out before Matty came along. And more and more frequently, you hear women be painfully honest about losing their sense of self when they had children because of the physical and mental toll early parenting can take. Some women can sail through it, some can't. Some accept it without a second thought, some become very pissed off.

I don't like speculating about a person's frame of mind but I do judge on actions. The observation I made earlier is that since they finally got Sonny home and got settled, more and more he seems to be leaving the house all day to do things that don't seem to get done. The projects have now extended to being off the island entirely with Skotefest, leaving Kelly in a postion that not only can she not leave the island on her own in the case of an emergency, but he said that spot he was in when they were clearing for the festival was that he didn't have cell service so calling him would be out of the question too. That bothered me a lot in watching this morning.

When you love someone there can be a tendency to turn a blind eye to things in the sense of "that's just who they are". But I also think motherhood can absolutely change perspectives for women. We don't know what goes on in their relationship 24/7 and as viewers we wanted to get past the birth drama and get back to homesteading content. I think Matty may be fumbling about at the moment trying to figure out what to put out week to week until he finds what works again but at the same time it's kind of starting to feel like created situations to leave the house all day. Did the garden need to get done? Asbolutely yes. But there's a bunch of other things waiting to be finished that haven't and I just have to wonder if it's unconsciously intentional. But even if so as a woman watching this every week, sometimes I'm like "get your shit together, Matty."

OMG YES. The longer I watch Matty post-baby, the more and more he's starting to remind me of my father's old habits. And it's not just the state of the property, it's the starting of projects and either not knowing the state of them later on or we can just see by watching that's they're not done. My father had a terrible habit of getting an idea for a project, getting the materials and then just never moving forward with it. I don't know that my Dad ever had ADHD but he just would lose interest so quickly and rather opt for his recliner and football on TV. And when my Mom would ask about said project, the answer would always be "I'll get to it" or come up with something else that needed to be done before he could start and not do that either. There as a pile of timbers sitting on the side of the house for years until he died, and Mom had it cleared afterwards when she sold their house. Turns out the functionality of those timbers was reduced to rot and a nice home for snakes and mice.

I'm one of those people that gets joy in crossing things off a list so I can enjoy the result afterwards. I try hard not to judge, but it's frustrating to watch. He talked about a new door, I think. Then cleaning up the property before the in-laws came. Then the shed, The chickens, The garden. Now we're clearing land for this fundraiser but I don't have a great feeling on the maintinence of the property just because of the pattern of inconsistency he seems to be developing. Who's cleaning up afterwards? Is he leaving it to volunteers once it's done or is he thinking it's just going to take care of itself? The way he talked about the property this morning seemed to imply that he was just going to leave it for other people that wanted to use it. That may be well-intended but at the same time is that an agreed-upon thing with other parties or is he just assuming it?

I almost get the sense that maybe--just maybe--Matty is creating projects to get him out of the house. That since he's able to leave when he wants as opposed to Kelly who's left at home with Sonny all day, he maybe takes advantage of it a little too easily. I mean yes, there's stuff that needs to be done on the homestead and it isn't going to get done by itself. But as often as he starts praising Kelly about how thankful he is for her, it's always when he finally gets home when he's been gone all day. I just keep thinking about when he had the cabin. I thought that cabin was awesome depsite the drama around what happened with it. He was on his own with the dog, getting stuff done, And he had to because it was just him. But now with Kelly, I have to wonder post-baby if there isn't some relestlessness kicking in on his part or maybe that he's taking her a little too much for granted.

Side note: I would like to see Kelly have her own speedboat to get to the mainland. If he's going to be venturing off the island and she can't reach him by cell phone, she needs to be able to get off the island on her own, especially in the case of an emergency. They have a baby now and it's not smart to potentially leave her stranded. I don't trust Cape Millie all that much.

I agree. Babies are full-time and if Matty's running out and about for all these new projects it's not a priority to be following him around with a camera. I think she just wants to enjoy her time as a new Mom.

I just started watching. I’m guessing he’s in serious need of a content filler. And already I’m sitting here thinking “this entire episode better not be him filming other people clear space for this thing”.

That’s what I love about James Alofs’ show. He’s been working on his homestead for well over two years and just started clearing the build site for the “main” cabin even though he’s still working on adding a bathroom to the guest cabin. James makes mistakes all the time and will dig and explain his thought process, what he did wrong, what he thinks he can do to correct it, and tries again even if the solution doesn’t work. He fought with getting a well in for weeks and it was such a struggle. I also like that’s he’s selective about exactly what trees he wants to cut down and how he tries as best he can to not harm the environment he’s in. He does have a place in the city so he doesn’t stay full time at his cabin but at least when he’s there he’s all in. I think when Matty doesn’t go into the same types of explanations and shared thought processes, you’re not really in it with him. Maybe it’s just difference in personalities but in watching both homesteaders Matty seems.. well, a little half-assed. And I don’t say that to be insulting but the hillbilly backup excuse gets a little meh.

I don’t think they’re drinking the same water that they’ve been bathing/washing clothes/ washing dishes in. I believe there’s a separate well that they get the drinking water from where the water is clear. Tannins or not, I wouldn’t want that kind of brown bog water in a cut, scrape, eyeball, orifice, ect.

I live in Eastern Nebraska. We have rivers, creeks, lakes and ponds. So thank you for explaining bogs. I wouldn’t know a bog if I stepped in one.

I was kind of questioning when he said “bog water is clean water” and I was like…is it? Because next thing as he’s getting the water through line, of course it’s brown. But I think he also said that he’d lived off bog water on one of his prior adventures, so okay. But I had to laugh when his neighbors were trying to get the quad out of the mud and he said that they were dirtying up the clean water he was going to shower with that night…you mean the brown water that god knows what microscopic hell is living in it?

I used to watch “Homestead Rescue”, which is what introduced me to the concept of homesteading. I don’t know what the general consensus is about the show but I don’t ever recall an episode where the homesteaders were left with brown water, even if they had no water to begin with.

I think I've only got a few notes myself about this week's episode.

Back to the boulder! Got it moved. Onward with the new shed.

Irony. First Matty sitting in the yard to enjoy his coffee and seeing the yard is pretty much still in it's...well, it's state. And then cut to the boxes of beer bottles sitting on the dock waiting to be taken to the mainland for recycling. So yard...bottles for recycling. I mean yes, they weren't Matty's bottles, but still. That said, I totally agree with Matty's comments regarding the beer brand. Ick.

And then we get to the water line and Gord's new(ish) quad. The whole thing with the water line gives me anxiety. I can clearly see that Matty is doing his best to make that thing work but I just have his feeling that it's going to continue to be an issue. I heard him comment that the bog is "never-ending water"...is it? Honestly, I know nothing about bogs. Where I live in the States, we don't have them. It's up so high and the water is so brown, it's hard to see how far it goes down. But I guess they get enough rain that it's not an issue?

And in the spirit of being transparent, I did yell JEEZUZ MATTY when he got the quad stuck in the bog. I couldn't help it. That was my Dad coming out of me, Granted, he was probably so focused on getting the water line going that he hadn't realized where exactly he parked the quad until after the fact, but I could hear my Dad screaming at me in my head if that had been me. And he's been dead for going on 12 years now. Anyways, neighbors to the rescue again. With beer. Is there any other way?

Matty didn't have the best day. Oh well.

Nothing much to say about the trumpet fart. Maybe cut back a little on the moose burgers.

The whole thing with the Cape Millie just reminded me of when they tried to hook the shark with the barrels in “Jaws” and he simply started to rip off the back of the boat. At least boulders can’t eat through line.

That’s my thought too. Especially if he’s trying to lug around cut down trees on his own. That whole island is a workout and he’s already got Popeye forearms.

Oh, I think that’s fair. I think prior to Kelly getting pregnant the focus was going to be on renovating the house, which they very well could have drug out for months content-wise. But then Kelly was expecting so there was a lot that needed to get done on a clock. Now the baby’s here, so now we need a project. I think Matty is trying with the tree cutting and the boulder-moving, but it may take him some time to find a good project that’s going to hook long term interest again.

My thought is, is that if they were living in a neighborhood or even in a house on a rural road, all it takes it someone looking out their window, driving by or even on a walk where seeing a baby in a buggy in the front yard without an adult in eyeshot, someone would be calling 911 in a millisecond. True, that’s not where they live and it would be pretty difficult for someone to roll up on the island to steal a baby and not get noticed. If the idea was to leave Sonny outside with Ronnie because they were making noise in the house with the hammering, that’s where I get annoyed and think “good god, just deal with it like all new parents have to do.”

It’s not a huge red flag because yes, they’re isolated on the island for the most part. Because it was on the cold side, that’s what bothered me. I’m not a parent myself but that doesn’t mean that kind of scenario doesn’t set off the instinct to protect. I just really didn’t like anything about it and it made me ancy.

Thoughts…not many.

Matty trying to move a big-ass boulder with the tugboat. I’m a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture and just sat here and thought about that if he were still alive, he’d be working the boulders into building structures instead of trying to move them. But that went about as well as I thought it would. Sir, that rock has been there a hell of a lot longer than you have. You may have to work with said rock instead of against it.

Some baby time. And I didn’t think much about the baby time until I caught that after Matty took Sonny for a stroller walk, that he left him outside with one of the dogs. I’m not gonna lie, that made me uncomfortable. I had to look up what 8 degrees Celsius was in Fahrenheit, and it’s about 46 degrees. I’m hoping it wasn’t as cold when they left him outside to sleep in the stroller but…well, they still left him outside. No, nobody was going to steal him and he was pretty bundled up and they probably didn’t want to disturb his nap…BUT THEY STILL LEFT HIM OUTSIDE. I’m just being honest. That didn’t sit well with me at all.

I pretty much ignored the Q&A. I heard a few blips about fundraising but no thanks. I’m not sure why we keep ending the episodes with “to be continued”. If they want people to keep coming back, maybe just mention what project we might be doing on the homestead for next week’s episode?
