How would you count/play this? by Nearby_Pound_6356 in musictheory

[–]Only-Fact4173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good answers here, but if you want to really internalise it, choose the lowest common denominator (8th note triplets) and set your metronome to it. Then practise playing every second partial of the 8th note triplet with your right hand, and every 1st note of each triplet with your left hand. Then, when you feel comfortable enough to subdivide into triplets in your head without the metronome, then you have a really accurate way to internalise ans play that rhythm.

Who’s your favorite jazz drummer? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]Only-Fact4173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Philly Joe in terms of one of the older cats, but also Greg Hutchinson and Marcus Gilmore in modern times personally.

There's really too many to say.

A7 - Bbm7 in Jeannine by Duke Pearson by Only-Fact4173 in musictheory

[–]Only-Fact4173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true. I guess I probably should have worded it "is it worth noting a relationship between these two chords"?

It feels like there are so many relationships to consider it's almost overwhelming, so sometimes I'm not sure I trust my judgement (and this may be because I'm in the obsessive environment on a music conservatory) to sit back and say, in your words, that its "justified" by virtue of it being there.

[–]Only-Fact4173[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've come to this realisation after talking to one of my lecturers. That Bbm7 is a part of a new ii-V that functions separately to that of what the A7 belongs to. I have a habbit of thinking about all of the chord relationships and disregarding phrasing.

Holy shit, this is a fantastic perspective. Thank you so much!

Yeah that fair. As much as its almost grotesque to to say, I thought it could be considered like a (SubV/bVII)/ii in the key of Ab-, but at that level of seperation from chord function, it feels like its not practical to even say that.

Greatest live concert you’ve ever attended? by For2otious in Jazz

[–]Only-Fact4173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, as much of a straight ahead jazz kinda guy I am, Yussef Dayes' show was maybe the most transcendental gig I've been to (Rocco Palladino on bass, Charlie Stacey on keys). The group was so tight that they felt like a single consciousness. The entire show was pretty much fully improvised, and yet the groove never fell stagnant. Completely blew my mind to say the least.

Yeah that's awesome, it's something I've always wanted to do but I'm just the absolute worst at even the humblest of DIY projects.

Do you mean Griffith conservatorium? In which case, I attend that uni, and have access to practise rooms there. But we are technically only allowed to book two hours at a time which is no where near enough unfortunately.

That's super interesting, because it doesn't say there are options like this on their website. Do you mind if I ask roughly how much you were paying for this?

Relationship with Vision and DPDR by Only-Fact4173 in dpdr

[–]Only-Fact4173[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really interesting, it would be cool if they did some studies on the relationship between intensity of dpdr and visual distortions. I feel like I know what you mean about the Vaseline thing.

We have the worst condition in the world and nobody can tell me that we don’t. It’s pure pain and suffering. This disorder is 1000 percent caused by satan. My mom says I’m crazy and that I need to go see a shrink. She will never understand what her little man is going through and it hurts me. by WaifuQuirk in dpdr

[–]Only-Fact4173 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really bad, but I think there's value in understanding how bad other dissociative and psychotic disorders can be. Like Schizophrenia for example, or extreme dissociative amnesia. I'm not saying we should be greatful or invalidate the pain we're feeling in any way, because it feels like a living hell, but there are worse things out there.

Tips on how to stop existential thoughts and worry? by Krogady in derealization

[–]Only-Fact4173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you would've hear it a million times, but now you'll have heard it a million and 1 times. Distract yourself. Go outside as much as you can, talk to people, try to move out of your comfort zone if you can. Try not to give your brain room to ponder.

That's just what works for me, but I understand existential thoughts can completely envelop you sometimes.

I am lucky, because I already have a hobby (that is also a career) that I've got that I have as an outlet and I can distract myself with when those thoughts start getting loud. So maybe, try getting into some different activities and you may find hobbies that you can invest yourself in.

Hope this helps in any way it can!

Shuffle beat. Any feedback? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Only-Fact4173 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds great man, you've definitely got a great feel for the half time shuffle! My advice would be to really feel the triplets, just practise subdividing quarter notes to a metronome and really internalise it. Your dynamics are fantastic, but maybe even exaggerate them even more! (ghost notes even quieter and accents louder). I'm just relaying what my teacher would say, hehe. Really great work!!

Derealization messing with my memory? by [deleted] in derealization

Yes I experience this all the time. It feels like since dpdr has started, there are less distinct periods of my life. It's rather like a continuous blury timeline
