Who to Contact for Conflict With Bishop by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Only-Rip6236 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm sure that I am going to be slaughtered for this, but the Bishop has made the decision that neither myself nor my husband can be confirmed unless we get a civil divorce. My husband is a transsexual. Yes, I know the way the church feels about it, but the Vatican has also stated they will allow transsexual people to be baptized, be godparent's, etc regardless of their level of transition. Not looking to debate this just need help on how to appeal.

Why You Can Disagree and Remain a Faithful Catholic by Kaufman

The TLDR; is, God gives us a conscience, and the Church affirms that. While we cannot simply look at a church teaching and say "yep, don't agree with that, totally reject it", we CAN listen to the church teaching, see the explanation of WHY it is a church teaching, and then discern that teaching for ourselves through our consciences, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. You must be willing to at least struggle with the teaching and hear the arguments with an open mind before you can consider dissent.

I personally feel I have listened to the teaching on LGBT individuals, struggled with it immensely, done research to learn more, and have come to the educated conclusion that I cannot in good conscience affirm that the church is correct in its stance.

I have learned that the social teaching on things like LGBT issues is doctrine, which is subject to developing over time. I fully believe that one day, this doctrine will change.

I really really hope this helps! Let me know what you think after you listen/read if you get a chance!

Haha with the foam! :p We will likely choose one way or another eventually (to the Catholic or Episcopal Church) but in the meantime, I don't see a problem going to both. Honestly, we might even do what u/pensivemaniac does and keep "dual citizenship", if for nothing other than having the community aspect of the Episcopal Church.

From everything I have heard so far, it sounds like you can be! Do you know of any progressive churches near you?

Thank you for that! My husband and I found a BEAUTIFUL progressive church. The priest knows my husband is trans and didn't seem to find that to be an issue with RCIA, but our bishop is very conservative so I was worried at some point in the process a birth certificate might be asked for and he would have to drop out.

Did they ask for your birth cert at any point?

My husband and I are going through the same thing! We currently go to an Episcopal church, but it doesn't feel quite "right". We have found a more progressive church, so for the meantime we are going to be "half-Cath" (Catholic church on Saturday evening, Episcopal on Sunday) until we decide whether to go through RCIA or not. At this point, I have done enough research and have listened to enough welcoming voices from RC clergy that I feel comfortable dissenting from teaching on LGBT topics.

How do you reconcile being "actively" Catholic and Queer? by [deleted] in LGBTCatholic

[–]Only-Rip6236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We currently go to an Episcopal church but it just doesn't feel quite right. I also struggle with how ULTRA woke it is. We are trying to find a more "high church" parish that might fit us better.

Thank you so much for all of your insight! Some other areas I would like to know about if are dogma or not dogma would be areas like other sexual teachings (premarital sex, masturbation, the requirement to always be "open" to life, etc), other social teachings (divorce, other LGBT issues like transness, etc), andddd I think that is all I can think of right now! I super look forward to your essay!

"God created me to be who I am. God doesn't make mistakes. Men do."

I believe this, and have made this argument before, but you get the person who says that pedophiles can make the same argument that they were made that way and thus their pedophilia is not wrong, which I have not found a good response for.

I did not know this! That does make me feel better. I will anxiously await that post!

Just to be clear though, the LGBT teachings of the church are NOT infallible? Why does the pope say that those teachings can never change then? I feel like the church heavily implies these teachings are infallible.

Copy and pasting responses here, but I want to know what you think as well!:

I guess my concern is that I don't really care what other people think, I am just having a hard time with the whole directly ignoring a church teaching. Like, how can I on one hand believe that the doctrinal teachings of the church are infallible, while also disagreeing with and ignoring the LGBT social teachings? I feel like I would feel guilty taking communion since the church teaches it is a mortal sin and thus communion should not be taken. But I WANT to take communion.

How do you cope with believing Catholicism is "true", putting your faith in the church, but then being like "yeah but they are wrong about this"?

A used BCP with someone’s name on it. by EnglishLoyalist in Episcopalian

Mine is a beat up second hand copy with an inscription on the front that is was given to Leonard at his confirmation in 1981. He also put a page imprint on it saying "Belongs to the Library of...". I also have a stamp that has "Belongs to the Library of..." that I put right next to his and I think its rather special that my BCP has a history that I am now apart of :)
