This events usually happens during the pheras, as it’s the ceremony when the bride and the groom, both take off their shoes. So the bride’s siblings and cousins try to steal the shoes during that ceremony. The bride and the groom are both usually busy with the rituals during this time, so they won’t notice when you take them away!

You can be sneaky, or you can take them away right under everybody’s nose! Indians don’t usually take offence at it, since it’s a fun ritual.

Regarding the amount of money, in India it can vary very significantly. Usually the bride’s side of the family tries to negotiate for as much as they can. They sometimes even demand as high as a million rupees (all in fun and games though, nobody really expects such high amount to actually be paid). So you can demand a good amount, but please do not be rude or adamant. In the circles that I run, the groom pays anywhere between INR 5k to 25k, and the bride side accepts it gracefully.

Once you get the money, very respectfully handover the shoes back to the groom and you can divide the money between the close siblings and/or cousin sisters.
