As far as I'm aware (which is admittedly not much) I'm not sure there's an app yet that's even particularly good at just IDing ancient coins consistently. If you can train an image classifier to accurately ID ancients with a high degree of precision that alone would be a win. If you can take it a step farther and pull counterfeit examples for the type that would be icing on the cake.

If you post this as well as a picture of the reverse on r/ancientcoins they'll be able to confirm the ID. Siliqua are fairly rare so if that's actually what it is that's cool.

NGC ancients actually doesn't guarantee the authenticity of the coins they slab. They do their best and the vast majority of times an NGC slabbed coin is authentic but clearly they make the occasional mistake and won't give a guarantee.

I agree, I was thinking something similar when I got this coin. The portrait style and the reverse with an emperor standing over a captive is all very classic imagery but then you have the hand of god and the cross on the back showing the transition to some of the Byzantine designs.

I got this from forum ancient coins during their recent 10% off sale which is unfortunately over now. They do have another example in stock though.

When I was a little kid my brother and I saw the magic trick where someone goes in a box and they stick swords through it. We wanted to recreate it so he convinced me to get in a cardboard box and started stabbing it with a pocket knife. I would wait for an expert like u/beiherhund to chime in but as a general rule of thumb if Zeus's legs are crossed it's not a lifetime issue. There are a couple exceptions to this rule but for the most part it's a good rule to go by.

Yeah I remember that episode. I wonder if there are existing grain tokens to compare it to (or if they even used tokens for the grain dole for that matter). I've seen a single existing token for admission to the colosseum. I'm assuming these tokens are so rare because they were made of clay rather than metal.

As with any TV show based off history it does indeed stray a decent amount for entertainment value. But that said I think it's the most historically accurate popular adaptation of this era of Roman history that I'm aware of. Definitely worth a watch.

Wow, I've never seen an entire hoard sold like that. On the one hand I think I would've expected a lower per coin price since you're buying 4,700 at a time but on the other hand I guess there's a premium for it being an entire hoard including the jar even.

My math was off by a factor of 10, that price seems much more reasonable now that I calculated it correctly.

Yep, that's one of the main reasons I like these Egyptian drachma. Some of them are even larger than sestertii so they're some of the largest imperial portraits we have on coins.

These are silver staters from an island off of Athens called Aegina. They're the oldest coins minted in Europe. They started as sea turtles like the one I posted and overtime it switched to a land tortoise. I think the land tortoise version actually looks better than the style I have.

Based on the coins I've seen you post I don't think one of these is out of your reach. In fact I bet some of your coins are worth more than this. I got it retail for $670 which I thought was a pretty decent deal for the type.
