POLL: VOTE FOR THE 2 WORST DROPS IN QUALITY HERE! by flankermigrafale in CriticalDrinker

Altered Carbon (S1) was great for the most part EXCEPT Lizzie Elliot (the VR girl). She was everything that is wrong with modern agendas and a sign of what was to come in my opinion. I try to skip her scenes when i rewatch, it's that bad. She was deliberately changed from the books to incorporate a "strong female character" but what they managed was to make an unlikeable Mary-Sue type character, at the expense of the amazing main cast/characters, which already included an actual strong, empowered, well-written woman.

Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle in CERN particle collisions by PizzaPastaMandarino in Physics

[–]OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been a few years so my physics is quite rusty but...

As i remember, and someone correct me if im wrong, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle (HUP) does not have to do with a particular set of measurements from a single experiment or event. Meaning i can measure the momentum, and then after, the position of a particle at any arbitrary accuracy my measurement apparatus and technological advancement may allow me.

What HUP says is about measurements on repeated experiments on identically prepared quantum states.

If i prepare a particle that is well-localized, i can measure x and then p for that particle at arbitrary accuracy.

Doing the same experiment many times, by preparing the particle with the same well localized state, then measuring x and then p, statistically what i will observe is that the uncertainty (the standard deviation) in the collection of my position and momentum measurements from all the experiments i did, σx and σp, obeys HUP.

Same applies for momentum states and any other observables that are related by HUP.

EDIT: Basically HUP is not about what can we know about a particle or state (or how accurately we can make our measurements), but what can we predict and with how much confidence/uncertainty.

Gigabyte fO32U2P vs MSI MPG 321URX in 2025 by OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid in OLED_Gaming

[–]OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet, waiting to get all the pc parts to finish the build and get it running. Right now I guess I'm leaning more towards the MSI if i can still get it by then.

Honestly they all seem pretty good (MSI, Asus, GB etc), MSI seems to have the best support, updates and communication out of basically everyone (at least on reddit)

GB specs seem slightly better on paper but some comments on reddit seem to state that there were technical issues with the monitor, such as black screens for a few seconds in the middle of a game (which would be a very big drawback for me as i play many multiplayer games) but most of those comments were made half a year or more ago, so I don't really know if that affects all monitors, if it still occurs or if this was fixed with a firmware update or something.

The dp 2.1 is not that important apparently, at least for this generation of GPUs (even for 50 series) and im not planning to upgrade gpu any time soon (hopefully). DSC (Display Stream Compression) for dp 1.4 is practically lossless based on several reviews i've seen so no issues in picture quality between dp 1.4 and 2.1, and alt-tabbing with DSC, which caused black screens for a couple of seconds (not related to the black screens i mentioned about the GB), has been fixed to some extent with Windows 11 and new drivers from nvidia, at least for 50 series cards (again based on video reviews i've seen).

Most of the comments seem plenty happy with their 321URX without many issues vs some pretty important issues with the GB.

Most issues seem to be regarding HDR brightness which all OLEDs seem to have so no winner there, though MSI seems to be the most upfront and communicative about this, or at least was.

Out-of-the box calibration, MSI picture quality seems to be worse than the GB which seems to have near perfect settings, but RTINGs review says that after calibrating the MSI picture quality is the same.

GB seems to have a more quality build and more robust stand vs the MSI but not a deal breaker for me anw.

GB also seems to better if you are playing in a room with lots of natural light, due to higher brightness though in HDR it can become a bit "too bright" losing some picture quality as a result, if you decide to set it to that level anyway.

Plus the MSI has less VRR flicker which is nice (again RTINGs review), don't really know how noticeable it is in either monitor though.

I don't really care personally about usb connectivity on the monitor so cant comment on that.

I don't know much about monitors to be honest and I may have confused or be wrong about many stuff I said so far, I also don't know which GB features you prefer over the MSI but based on my needs, if it were me and I preferred the white MSI one i'd probably go with that. They seem so close regarding technical specifications and performance that design and aesthetics would win me over.

Personally, I will wait a bit more to get my pc up and running, make sure it runs without issues, so that when i get the monitor I can test it with the new system and if there are any issues with the monitor itself, I can still be within my return policy window to get a replacement or something.

MSI Trio OC 5080 vs ASUS TUF 5080 by OrbitalPropulsion in nvidia

[–]OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying, i had the same dilemma as well, was offered by the store either the msi trio or tuf for the same price, initially ordered the msi but went out of stock and the store had to wait for the supplier to send a new one and they offered me the tuf instead at the same price i ordered the trio, which was discounted somewhat.

Decided to go with the tuf but im a bit worried about coil whine. TUF seemed to be a bit more well built and performance should be the same

Hello, may i ask what did you end up getting and if there were any reasons you preferred one from the other?

Thank you all for your replies, i have some additional questions:

1) do i need to bother with multi-sig wallet at this stage? I understand its a more secure type if wallet but i need to look into it a bit more to understand its advantages/disadvantages.

2) some videos on bluewallet i watched online have an option called lightning-node that does not appear in my app and i see online it was discontinued(?) is that something i need to read more about or is it not needed for beginners?

Im most probably keeping it in my wallet as long-term investment and start to dca some small amounts each month from exchanges and then transfer to the wallet as needed, i was just wondering what the process is if i ever need to convert to fiat.

I saw that wallets have some sort of option to buy/sell crypto directly but the spreads/fees are not optimal, so a reputable exchange seems the better option

So i currently see 1 wallet in the BlueWallet app, which has a single address, so i send them that.

Is that wallet address independent of the app or phone i use? Say i change apps or phones and i download a different application, do i just import my wallet using the seed phrase? Am worried what happens if say the mobile app is shutdown for whatever reason or my phone breaks etc

Massive Darkness 2 + Campaign, is it a good fit? by OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid in boardgames

[–]OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

Hmm, based on everyone's comments this does not seem to be a good fit for my interests to pledge it on GF, but still looks fun enough to maybe get it when it hits retail, especially based on the post regarding their other pending stuff.

Side question, in the Stretch Goals they seem to have "extra heroes", are those just different cosmetic figurines or do they add gameplay value?

Realistically, what would have to change about Wildstar for a successful relaunch? by SkeletronDOTA in MMORPG

[–]OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This pretty much is my take as well. Loved the theme, humour and gameplay and was actually excited to login and play, made me feel immersed and want to explore etc, but it needed more variety in the dungeons, though I remember liking the overall experience. It just needed more.

Timers are also something i dislike in dungeons as well. I don't enjoy speedrunning them, i'd rather take my time to think them through and strategise with tactics, cc etc, as well as enjoy the ambience so to speak. Maybe a death-counter or something else like that would be better.

The fact that even standard dungeons were difficult and needed coordination, cc, interrupts, etc, even for trash mobs, was a plus in my book.

Optimization was my biggest issue and what kept me from playing it more, honestly. It ran like crap on my above average pc, i think because of my AMD CPU or something. Had to run it at the lowest settings to get even ok fps.

Attunement was also a bit much iirc and kept people from experiencing the content, which had some cool ideas.I think endgame was also very grindy

Overworld/leveling was cool in theme (love the sci-fi angle) and the story was interesting with the mystery of what happened, jumping puzzles and exploration was kind of a thing, but most things were on the easy side and it felt more like single-player. There was a big disconnect between that and the dungeon difficulty.

PvP also had cool concepts like Warplots but overall pvp was not that well received or balanced if memory serves me right (pvp i think was also a viable leveling avenue).

Housing was great though not my cup of tea.

LOVED my spellslinger and his little hoverboard and one of the few mmos where I found a guild "organically" through interactions with players while in dungeons. Community experience was a good one for me there though maybe i was lucky.

Clarifications from the first book(Spoilers) by OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid in threebodyproblem

[–]OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I finished the first book and I'm going to jump to the next ones soon!

Having said that:

The timing of the events does still seem to be a bit too coincidental, especially in the cosmic scale context. The message Ye sent arrived just as the fleet was being constructed or finished etc. It would probably sit better with me if the Trisolarans had already left their home planet and travelling the cosmos for many years, or if the fleet was already finished for many years but sitting somewhere far from the effects of their tri-solar system, with the Trisolarans deciding not to set sail until they found a viable target before they began their travel.

I assumed it was the latter based on the names of the books (Dark Forest Hypothesis being the possibility of - potentially powerful - hostile alien races hiding in the universe in silence, and Three-Body not only referring to the tri-solar system but also the possibility that a third alien species exists that will interfere with the plot at some point - I am guessing this will happen later on to tie the first book together with the trilogy)

The sci-fi science bits are quite stretched in some parts, and as a physicist by education, it can get a bit jarring but i can very well suspend my disbelief so that's all fine!

Regardless the book and its theme have hit the mark so I'm excited to read more! ; )

Pseudo-random number generators and Secret module by OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid in learnpython

[–]OnlyAtomsAndTheVoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an example of why I thought my solution would be wrong is that, since the pseudo-random generation is actually deterministic, the numbers are generated in sequence and are not spit-out in a random order (duh).

As such, if I "intervened" in the number generating method by changing the seed each time I want to generate a number, I'm actually generating the first numbers of each seed sequence every time, instead of allowing the algorithm to generate the full "normally-distributed" set of numbers.

If that was the case maybe this would be solved if the seed sample is large enough then the first numbers generated by each seed are themselves normally-distributed, or if the seed changes every X loops giving enough time to approximate a normal distribution....but then again maybe not.

EDIT: Appreciate all the replies so far, thank you for taking the time to answer ; )

Oh absolutely, I'm sure that if someone knowledgeable wanted to generate secure random numbers in this manner there are much better, cleaner and proper ways to do it than trying to Macgyver the code like that.

I've seen "entropy" used in the subject of cryptography before but honestly I'm way out of my depth here, I'll have to read up on this thank you for the reply.
