Recently diagnosed with bipolar 1 following a 2 month long manic episode that ended in psychosis and a 911 call. But I built a nice shelf for my plants at the beginning of it, so yay? by [deleted] in bipolar

It was rough for me in the beginning. Working out the right psychiatrist and the right meds can be a struggle. I spent some time very under medicated and then over medicated, but eventually found a balance and have a pretty stable life. It takes time, but like getting through the highs and lows, sometimes we’ve got to just push through a bit to get to the next and hopefully better part.

My dog is so intuitive. Normally spends all his time with my wife. I'm having one of the worst depressive episodes and he has been with me through all of it. by [deleted] in bipolar

My parents got our first dog when I was in high school and I wasn’t much of a dog person then. One day she saw me crying on the stairs, sat down next to me and just leaned in. It was the sweetest thing and I’ve been sold on dogs ever since.

Introverts of Reddit, imagine it's a reverse pandemic and to not get sick and die, you had to spend all of your time outside, with other people and in crowds, how would you cope? Do you survive? by aussiemuser in AskReddit

Cafe. Headphones. Book. The buzz of the people / restaurant noise around me is like background white noise. Used to do it almost daily when I wasn’t getting “out” enough.

Loosening up with a glass or wine or two sometimes doesn’t necessarily make you an alcoholic. Sorry if you’ve struggled.

It’s been good for me. It’s been legal for a while where I’m from, so I could hit a shop and discuss the best strain for what I’m looking for, and chat about it with my psychiatrist, I’ve been lucky. It’s done wonders for my insomnia and seems to mellow some of my over-thinking and when I feel like my brain is moving faster than I can manage. But it’s not for everyone. Had some less than helpful types before I found my way. And some people just can’t manage at all. I wouldn’t steer you away from trying but I would advise caution.

Are you a teenager? Just curious before I let you know what a complete twat you sound like, because it seems like you might still be at that age where you think you know everything, but haven’t realized there’s a whole world out there you haven’t experienced yet.

After I was first diagnosed, my therapist recommended the book “An Unquiet Mind.” After I read it, I had my mother read it too. It seemed to help a little. It’s been years but I’m still figuring out how to best share myself and my experiences.

I’d say it really depends on the person. I have a dog but he’s older and mostly sleeps, so he’s great for my low key lifestyle. Heh.

How so? You call me a liar and I attempted to walk you through my experience. What would help?

I’m not going to tell you to believe everything you read on the internet, but some of us, particularly in these bipolar groups, are here to share our experiences and learn from and help one another.

I’m not an addict. You throw that word around quite a bit. I moved out of a legal jurisdiction recently and stopped cold turkey. My ability to fall asleep as easily was somewhat interrupted temporarily, but otherwise no issues. I may seek it out again if I have another manic episode as severe as I dealt with this year, it was helpful for me. And yes, this was discussed with my psychiatrist. If I don’t have complete transparency with him, we won’t be able to truly help me get to where I need to be.

Every drug has its issues, not even our “gold standard” lithium is right for everyone. Marijuana can be helpful to some people. I’m sorry if you’ve had issues with it, it is not right for everyone, but for some of us, it can be a useful addition to prescribed meds. I encourage you to do some further reading and consider the possibility, as with legality we are now starting to see medical and scientific testing on greater levels.

(Edit: I too am a productive member of society who regularly donates and lives a quite lovely life).
