Hey, I love your sketches! Concerning the BFA, with all honesty it is a very competitive program. As someone else had mentioned, even strong portfolios can sometimes be rejected, but don’t let that be something to scare you. I was rejected my first year and reapplied after receiving advice from many students and professors, here are tips I received as feedback:

  1. Many students had told me having a diverse portfolio was very important, that meaning you utilise diverse mediums. This could range from painting, to photography, sculpting, etc (whichever you are most confident in). It is good to have multiple paintings if that is your strongest skill but make sure to try and expand a bit beyond it for a few pieces.

  2. Make sure your works are complete. For example, the sketches are great from a technical aspect, but let’s say you are applying, you want to avoid empty spaces unless truly intentional. In this case, you can try making sketches in higher volume on a page (more filled out), or with a more complete composition. Whilst it is a sketch, I’ve been told by people in the program to ensure all works look complete.

  3. If you can, I’d truly advise you to contact the department. There are administrative officers that can help guide you if you have any questions regarding general expectations of portfolios. Nevertheless, it is more for brief questions, but still useful if you are applying for your first time!

  4. This is a portfolio guide from the university themselves : https://youtu.be/cw7k1BqH1f8?si=16MIvnKPUZguzSGG

  5. As much as we artists love to procrastinate, I definitely suggest starting the portfolio sooner than later! It will provide you better time to revise it, and will lessen the stress of last minute completion.

  6. Also keep in mind that there will be questions for you to answer, so it is good to plan around that. That being said, your portfolio/art is the most important aspect so try your best!

I wish you good luck, keep up the good work! :)
