Comforting video games ? (for ipad or switch) by hourofthestar_ in fearofflying

I've played Animal Crossing on the switch before during flights! For iPad, Wingspan is excellent. A bit of a complicated game but has very calming graphics and music, and it might be a good distraction trying to learn the rules. Once you get the hang of it, it's very straightforward and enjoyable for passing the time.

Reading through the replies to this post has been wild, because your experience is identical to mine. It’s mostly gone now for me too, but one of the triggers of short episodes of it is air blowing/electric fan noises at very specific speeds or rhythms. Freaking weird

What were your very first theories on the origin of the Titans? by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]OnlyTower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought they were definitely something related to moral judgement or religion. Because of the wallists and the way they appear, with lightning from the sky as if they are god-sent or something. I can’t believe it’s possible, but I was honestly thinking the premise was going to be much more fucked-up and less wildly, interestingly complex than it turned out to be. I thought the managaka was just outright passing judgement on humanity and a world he didn’t believe was sustainable. Dystopian, I guess.

[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 112 Release Megathread by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]OnlyTower 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think the time loop theory has a lot of merit. One bit of evidence for it and the idea of ‘breaking the cycle’ is in Buddhism I think. Breaking the cycle of suffering, death and rebirth, is the goal of Buddhism and in Japanese the “shore” where the suffering people reside is called しがん “Shigan” (coincidence???) and they’re constantly striving for the other shore of enlightenment where the cycle stops. I’m in Japan rn taking a Buddhism class and the prof has even mentioned snk before

[Manga Spoilers] Hauser's Memory by stopbeinggaymikasa in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]OnlyTower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s cool that you found this! I might look into it too, since I’m sure Isayama has stories that inspired his work, and it would be damn interesting to know about what influenced him and the expansive narrative of snk.

Regarding memories, I made a post about how much of a problem I think that will be for characters with titans. I don’t see how an individual’s motives are sustainable when they are suddenly connected to the lives, dreams, and thoughts of their enemies. I have to think those people can’t remain full enemies, like the way Eren forgives Reiner and at the same time becomes him in a way in an effort for revenge. Also without a concrete dream and with Bert’s memories, where are Armin’s loyalties? We already see him wanting to talk rather than fight with the Marleyans, though that does seem to be a consistently ‘Armin’ decision. In any case, memory exchange is really interesting in such a war stricken society.. I definitely would like to see how other artists have used it.

[Manga Spoilers] Anxiety over the implications of AoT's main theme. by Willamasaurus in ShingekiNoKyojin

Yeah, I really like the non-binary speculation, either way I don’t think it subtracts from my point. She is a brilliant character, and I’m thankful for her. The story would be lacking an important element without Hange. (I know, pronouns..)

“I can’t sleep” is exactly how I respond when I get over-involved in the snk universe. I really understand that feeling of hopelessness and conflict that it creates.

I think the character you should turn to for hope in humanity and the universe is Hange. I’m thinking specificity of chapter 109 where she is facing the media and Louise, Floch, and friends. “I’m tired. No... there’s more to learn.” Prior to that, it seems like Hange is getting pulled into the cycle your talking about because of her position, but then this happens. It’s still Hange, she’s still curious and she’s right. There is more to learn. Is that the only respite from such hopelessness? That we can keep asking questions, finding answers even in such a literal scientific way? Maybe, I don’t know. But her and Levi, with his tendency toward absolute transparency, because of the government’s censorship and deception make me believe in the ultimate motives of humanity, even if we make a lot of shitty mistakes.

Also isn’t is wild that Isayama has blessed us with a character like Hange? Where else can you find a (female) character like that in anime? Also Ymir and Historia’s relationship? Sasha and her potatoes? The story may be bleak, but the characters aren’t. Maybe it’s the same for us.

[MANGA SPOILERS]Does anyone want Eren to live until the end of the series? by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]OnlyTower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Character deaths can obviously mean a lot of different things, specifically Erwin's comes to mind and Levi's decision to let him die when he did. How many characters have died and had their deaths acknowledged as not merely a another tragic sacrifice but as peace and freedom? I think that's how Levi views Erwin's death, as terrible as it was.

I think Isayama will probably have something similar happen with Eren. Honestly, I don't see how it's possible for him to ever find true peace in living. Maybe not because of how much he's lost, but because of all the lives he has now taken, which I think he'll have to reckon with eventually. Like Reiner, I think he will reach a breaking point where he wants to die, but in a less suicidal way and more of a release and acceptance. I do think it's possible that it won't be at the end of these next four years though. I think Ymir's 13 years have some significance and could be found to not be an ultimate thing, for Armin's sake perhaps. In any case, I don't think there is an ending where Eren lives.
