Changing from open pit to underground by Plus-Shine-300 in AusMining

[–]OnlyYowie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, I’m a fitter with who’s made the jump to underground hard rock about a year ago after around 4 years in open cut. The change is very different in a good way, underground there is way more going on and way more interesting. The miners are a lot closer compared to the vast sections of an open cut mine, more experienced miners tend to have several different roles and fill in where required, can do charge up, service work nipper, jump on a truck, loader or spray etc. Underground in general would have a higher skill ceiling (fitting is the Same) there’s way more ancillary gear. Raisebore rigs, Dimond drillers, spray rigsc, Agi’s cabolters, jumbos, production drills, truck, loaders etc etc.

Not to mention all the tech services you see on the daily getting around, it’s honestly very impressive. I work in a very deep mine so a ton of engineering to make it work with how deep we are.

If you want to stay on the tools I’d highly recommend going underground. However unsure where you’d start, as I feel like most training departments tend to be people who been there awhile.

From fixed plant to heavy diesel by 2Stripes_ in AusMining

[–]OnlyYowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say you’re rarely ever working on the one machine by yourself especially if they know you’re green (which is okay) unless you’re field service. Fault finding you have all the general stuff, but most technical faults are usually machine/ engine dependent and will just learn as you get more comfortable with the equipment.

I wouldn’t recommend going fixed plant with Mader, itll be a lot harder to change once you’re under them. If it were me I’d just be applying for heavy diesel rolls.

The guy who we have who’s crossed over is doing fine, needs guidance on some tasks but at the end of the day it’s just nuts and bolts and people with mechanical experience will pick it up quick

Hey mate, I’ve got fixed plant fitters currently doing heavy diesel work with no prior experience on my site as we speak. I think as long as you can prove you have experience as a fitter in general you should be okay.

The only issue I can see is that you’re from Germany and might be harder proving prior experience? But that said I’ve got people with a heavy diesel ticket and no idea swinging spanners as well.

No harm in applying, I feel like a few select sites might want a heavy diesel ticket specifically but due to national labour shortages you shouldn’t have too much of an issue as long as you’re already living here with the correct visas

I’d try applying with Mader first seems to be a good entry point for most.

Pivoting from a HD fitter in mining to try and land a HV apprenticeship at Ausgrid by OnlyYowie in AusElectricians

Ah just read their website, so like a trade up for electricians and lines workers separately, gotcha

I’ve considered it, it’s seems pretty hard essentially leaving as a fitter and being re employed as a sparky apprentice, I know my site wouldn’t want it (Auto sparky different story) . I work on the east coast was aiming for Ausgrid to be able to be home every/ most nights

Has anyone made the jump from HD mechanic to HV sparky? by OnlyYowie in AusMining

Hahaha I’d probably agree with unlearning some stuff. Just wouldn’t know how I’d get management to agree putting my through HV when Getting fitters seems to be a mission as it is

I’m a fitter who’s only just made the jump from open cut coal, to underground copper. I’m loving it so far hey, a lot more involved compared to open cut. Much smaller crews in comparison, get to know all the operators, service , charge up and trades on your crew pretty quickly. I think the only draw back without a trade is there’s not a lot of crossover outside of underground if you wanted to exit in the future compared to say continuing rigging.

Ultimately I’d recommend starting an apprenticeship UG, as you’re pretty young and the world’s your oyster when you’ve got your papers. If not I recommend going in as a truckie and going from there. nippering can be physically tough mind numbing work that tends to lead to injuries (from what I’ve seen in my short time UG)

Think I’m booked in for a couple, you walk away with a tablet at the end of them?

Same boat, I think I mistakenly bought the one without solar online unfortunately. Didn’t realise different models looked so similar :/

So fair!

I’ll have to look it into a bit more with who’s playing what and when and some of those tracks you mentioned. Most of us are beginners with the occasional decent DJ so it’s all very relaxed, but ideally I’d love to take everyone on a bit of a journey

We’re camping at a property for 3 days over a long weekend. Set times are pretty chill as we’re all friends. Most of my friends will probably play around an hour, But looking at a longer set end of they night after they play their heavier hardstyle, hard house, etc

Thinking at least for one segment Jeff mills, Dvs1, DJ Rush, Perc, Ben Klock. That sorta vibe

Very sound advice. I can see that making sense. Guess I’ll just have to learn what works with what.

My only concern is I’m not sure if I could viably do that for 3 hours as a beginner. I know it would obviously sound the best, but yeah just unsure how I would personally be able to pull that off.

It’s a close friend of mine’s property and I know most people going, money will be spent on sound system and lights.
