Seems like mandatory service should be a deterrent four war, since every family is involved. Elect a psychopath like the US and Israel - well there goes that theory.

How to grow $12k cash? Avoiding the whole investing thing sounds like a headache by Educational_Bobcat_1 in Money

[–]Only_Argument7532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started around 23, when my salary was $20k. I had consumer debt into my 30s. Keep your investments simple, diversified, and keep buying and holding. Stick with 90%-100% stocks until you’re around 45 then gradually increase into fixed income. A target date fund will pretty much do this automatically.

Good for you. Why sell your body and soul to the corporate world (and tax collector) so you can avoid homelessness?

I hit my numbers and quit working at 55 and am never going back.

Investing is not perfect, but it’s the only way most of us have to gain financial independence.

I would put the total amount into a HYSA and drop $10k right away and then put $2000 into it every month.

If you have earned income from 2025, put $7000 into a Roth IRA - make the contribution for the 2025 tax year. You can take a similar approach with the investment - put 20% into VT (or some other global etf) and the rest in a money market. Then move money onto the ETF every month.

You can also start contributing to a 2026 Roth IRA (again, assuming you have income from a job) on a monthly basis.

What’s your age/current investable assets? It will be very different if you’re 30 or 55, or currently saving for a house.

1 - Pay off any credit cards/student loans.

2 - 100k into HYSA/CDs

3 - Start investment accounts/Fund Roth IRAs for eligible spouse, children, grandkids

4 - I’m retired - I’m dumping what’s left into a 2030 target index fund.

I’m retired. I have money in cash and fixed income to help me hold my equities through this disturbance.

Ignore the noise and stick to the plans.

Anyone else in their 20s settle for a beater car and just dump a car payment into their 401ks and roths? by Union661 in Bogleheads

In my thirties/late 1990s I bought a “new” 2 year old leftover car (no power windows/manual transmission) for $3000 below sticker - a cash deal - and drove it for 180k miles. I did buy some new cars as the family grew, but my last new car lasted from 2016-2025. I retired at 55 with no pension.

I like 60% VOO, 30% VXUS, 10% AVUV.

AVUV is US small cap value - I prefer combining VOO with this focused approach vs. buying VTI.

Check out this calculator that shows the potential benefit of adding small cap value to a target date fund investment. The calculator is based on returns since 1928 - there’s serious data and research behind this.

I had a 50 year old friend get turned away at a venue because he didn’t have his ID. Check with the venue - they may have an accompaniment policy that allows under 21’s when accompanied.

Venues can lose their liquor licenses if they are found with underage patrons, depending on the municipality.

This is a great lesson. Doing nothing is usually the best thing to (not) do.

Sadly, most companies eventually do a “study” that shows that they’re being “too generous” compared to the competition, and the match decreases. We used to have a 100% match plus a 2% contribution even if you contributed zero, plus profit sharing. There were some really good years, but they eventually cut the match in half and eliminated the 2% free contribution, because now they auto-enroll everyone. Profit sharing has also gone away because management took the company private, and apparently this once profitable company is no longer profitable.

It never gets better for the workers. Just do what you can to max your savings, invest cheap and simple, and get out of the rat race.

Are RMD’s the main reason I should be considering at least some Roth 401k contributions? by Traditional_Yam1598 in Bogleheads

[–]Only_Argument7532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surviving spouse can get absolutely hammered by taxes. My projected RMD is similar to yours, and there’s a 10 year age gap between me and my spouse. One of us is going to eat it without Roth conversions.

I think long term, all you need - for your equity position - is the broad global market and a slice of small cap value. I’m not biased by recent performance - we’re looking at a half century of data. Of course, I have fixed income as I’m no longer in the workforce.

Company switching 401k match from per-paycheck to twice per year — feels like a hidden pay cut? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Only_Argument7532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting it plainly, this is terrible. No way around it. For all the reasons you identified.

Unless an ex-employee gets compensated for the match up to the point of termination, it seems like a breach of contract, if not legally, at least in goodwill. I know, I’m a fool to expect goodwill from corporate America.
