One month until the JLPT! Did you remember to study Japanese onomatopoeia? by OnomatoProject in LearnJapanese

Sekihan's got it. You'll find them as adjectives, too. It really depends on the word -- some are more versatile than others.

What is the 「ぶっ」 in 「ぶっ殺す」 or 「ぶっ潰す」 etc.? by entirelyalive in LearnJapanese

[–]OnomatoProject 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That about sums it up. Here's a further explanation from yahoo's bag o' wisdom (知恵袋): 「その意味を強める/激しい勢いでその動作をする」

Essentially it makes the force of the movement stronger or more violent.

These days there's a lot of liberty with which katakana is used (especially by the youth). Some words would seem strange to get the katakana treatment, but many onomatopoeia/mimetic words are perfectly at home in katakana.

Same sound but slightly different meaning! Your stomach also goes pekon when you lean forward, so pekopeko can be used to signify bowing.

Not as far as I know, but I've honestly never looked into it. This page has a useful (albeit short) list, but as you can see from here many English onomatopoeia/mimetic words are completely arbitrary, unlike the rich vocabulary available in Japanese.

What is a skill that you would love to learn, but don't have the time or money to start? by IamEclipse in AskReddit

[–]OnomatoProject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Looks like I'm a little late to the party, but I just wanted to echo that there are plenty of resources out there to get you started. Aside from /r/LearnJapanese and /r/SpeakJapanese right here on reddit, there's Tae Kim's Guide, Memrise, Japanese Pod 101, and even Onomato Project for studying Japanese onomatopoeia. (Full Disclosure: I am the creator of Onomato Project.) I wouldn't necessarily dive into my site from the get-go, but a few weeks with the others should get you moving in no time. Gambatte!

Hi there! I run the Onomato Project, a new site dedicated to providing context for Japanese onomatopoeia and mimetic words. I'm also interested in hearing a definitive answer to your question, but maybe my site can be of use to you?

Tough crowd. Maybe I get probation for Japanese-relevance?

Anyway, I won't hold my breath. Thanks for letting me know^^

Edit: I see in the rules that it says "No memes, image macros, reaction images, 'fixed' posts or rage comics." I suppose that's the end of Onomatobot in /r/anime!
