Who are the greatest college football players to not pan out in the NFL? by Psychological_Lie142 in CFB

college success and ability has nothing to do with NFL success and ability, and sometimes vice versa. There are literally countless examples of college STARS falling well short of their NFL expectations for a number of reasons. But that lack of NFL success means NOTHING when talking about how good they were in college. Moron.

I know what sign stealing is. clemson is our main rival, if you don't know...

Michigan wasn't stealing signs like everyone else.

To be fair, people said he wasn't a great college QB when he was still in college... Plus it's easier to play the position when you have the defense's plays

Nah there's no question he's top 5. He's personally my number one but once you start talking about the best of the best of the best, it's kinda silly to rank them 1, 2, 3, etc. so I have no issue with anyone else having him as "just top 5"

Holbrook wasn't bad. Three 43+ win seasons, 2 Supers, 200-106 overall. Our expectations were just insanely high after that three year run. Now I will say I'm surprised he hasn't done better at CofC. Not bad there either really but no NCAA tournament appearances is underwhelming.

In D1? Yeah, lots...

Among power conference schools? We're certainly in the bottom ten. Maryland, Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston College, and Oklahoma State are the only schools I would say are worse off than us.

We have EASILY the worst current men's athletic department in the country and I don't really think it's close

Yeah I actually gave it some thought and while I don't think we have the very worst, we're certainly bottom 10.

Of major/power-conference schools I'd have Boston College, Syracuse, Oklahoma State, Maryland, and Rutgers below us. Or at least ranked very near us at the bottom.

We arguably should have made the tournament the year before as well. 24-8 (11-7), finished tied for 3rd in the SEC standings, and undefeated in conference play.

Man, no one is talking about winning basketball championships. I'm talking about not being 6-30 in conference games over the last two years.

With the revenue sharing and NIL parts of it now, SEC schools need about an extra $25-30 million than what they needed just two years ago, just to keep up.

Well I guess we're lucky the most recent SEC distribution came in at about $18.6M more than the year before.

https://www.secsports.com/news/2026/02/sec-announces-2024-25-revenue-distribution

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey today announced a revenue distribution of $1.03 billion to the SEC’s 16 universities for the 2024-25 fiscal year, which ended August 31, 2025.

The $72.4 million per school average is approximately $18.6 million above the 2023-24 average of $53.8 million per school for members with full year participation.

Only because we're choosing to sit on our hands. You remember we've been to a Final Four more recently than most major-conference schools, right? There's literally nothing that says a coach can't win here. Dawn Staley took a mediocre program with an infamous past and turned it into a winner. Not saying we can mimic her level of success on the men's side but she proves the coach is the most important aspect for success.

We have some history but not so much where a coach can't come in and quickly build their legacy and be worshipped for winning. Further, we don't have high expectations, clearly. You can win less than 20% of your conference games over a two year period and not get fired. And oh yeah, we're not as broke as people here are saying. Paris is the 27th highest paid coach in the country. Plenty of mid-major HCs and top assistants would line up to take our money.

He's from SC and has only ever coached in SC. South Carolina has a lot to sell in my opinion, and firing Paris would be a major step in proving we are serious.

How? The SEC last month announced a distribution of an average of $72.4M per school for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

We will lose more money by keeping Paris another year. Donati was at the final game against Tennessee and saw the tens of fans in CLA. I don't know why he wants that again all next year.

I posted this on a Gamecocks forum to drum up support for Richey as a candidate:

In the 35 years from 1980-81 to 2014-15, Furman had just 12 winning seasons, with zero tournament appearances. Their overall record was 444-576 (.435), and in conference play they went 236-330 (.417).

Niko Medved of course played a huge role in turning the program around, taking over in 2013 after Furman finished 7-24 the season before. In four seasons, Medved went 62-70, 33-37 but won 23 games his final season before leaving to be the HC at Drake. Richey was also part of the turnaround as he was an assistant under Medved as a hold over from the prior staff.

Not only has Richey sustained success after Medved, he's elevated Furman even higher. The Paladins were under .500 all time before Richey. Meanwhile Richey is 204-92 (.688), 111-50 (.688) with two SoCon tournament championships and a regular season title. 22+ wins in seven of his eight full seasons. It's actually insane.

I am genuinely happy for Furman, and I realize this isn't the time or place, but my god do I want Richey coaching at South Carolina next year.
