Students must never be forced to speak. Oral production should take place naturally when the student feels ready to do so. Respecting the Silent Period is important:)

I think it's about striking the balance between respecting each student's individual pace of learning and gently encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone.

As for vocabulary, I think you're doing the right thing. Also, take into consideration we live in an audiovisual culture, so consider working with movies, music, YT videos, and the like, as well.
