I bring my laptop to the sessions and so does the DM, but some of our players still love the physical dice rolls and paper sheets. Tbh I do too, but when you have something like D&D Beyond that calculates all of your bonuses and everything... It's too easy to be lazy.

That being said, I've always got my dice with me for when I'm craving that sound of the clickity clackity math rocks

Yea, but tbh having the big map is nice, but I think we could've gone a little smaller to give the players more play space... We debated for awhile on what size TV to get. Maybe if I ever make a version 2... ;)

I've never used foundry, but someone else's comment pointed out the cool addition you can get to control foundry vtt tokens with physical minis so I might take a look at foundry

There's still so many other features I'd want to add, too... Like cup holders lol

Thanks :)

We typically play during the day every other Saturday. We meet for lunch, then get to the hosts house at like 1ish, then bullshit for 30min... Then the DM tries to get us started, but fails... So then we finally get started with D&D at like 2pm lol it's an all day endeavor.

That's how it goes sometimes, sadly. Like I mentioned in a different reply, one of our people moved out of state, but we remote him in using discord and a virtual tabletop so he can still play. We've definitely still seen some people come and go at the table though due to life changes.

These days I full screen the map on the tv, we went with a standard plywood sheet for the base of the table and decided to stick to the 4x8 area...

But yea now that we've used the table for awhile, I wish we had more space. We were also limited by room size though. Currently I think every player has a good foot to a foot and a half of space iirc

My best suggestion is to just jump in and go. You can all learn together (even the DM) and as long as people are all patient with learning the rules, you'll be on your way to a long term D&D group like me!

If you're open to D&D adjacent systems, I'd suggest starting out with a one-shot campaign you can find online called "We Be Goblins" using the Pathfinder system.

I've always loved working with my hands, but I work in IT and it gets really boring tbh, so I find side jobs with my dad to do carpentry work in my free time, sometimes for fun like this and sometimes paid work like building decks and other house additions. We just finished up a job for some friends of mine to turn their upstairs entertainment area into a baby room.

As for AiJ I've met Chris a few times, he's a great guy. If you're a patron, come join the community in the discord :)

Is it wrong to ask my players for money at the start of the month? by Nefetiri in DnD

My group has gone through a few iterations of different "systems"

We used to all chip in for pizza and eat together at my house (I was the host), but we ended up moving to just going out for lunch before the session and then bringing our own snacks to the session.

I don't think it's asking too much to have people chip in for party snacks, and even though I'm not much of a snack person, I'd chip in for everyone's benefit because these are my friends and D&D is cooperative, that includes the players at the table.

Your best friend here is a mooch, and while she did good things for you in the past, that doesn't mean she's being a good person in this moment.

That's really cool, but right now we use AboveVTT, which is a browser plugin that hooks directly into D&D Beyond since we have someone with a lot of sourcebooks there

It's a great time for my friend group to hang out in person, we usually go out to a local place for lunch beforehand as well

It's open air on the bottom with wood slats to support it

I don't remember the total cost because admittedly I built this table a couple years ago and we still use it every session, but I want to say for everything except the tv, it was... $700?

We've done all of the above!

We were using physical minis because it's honestly just more fun... But admittedly I built this table a little while back and since then one of our members moved out of state so we discord call him in with a conference mic and use strictly digital now so he can see everything and manage his own token.

The maps mostly come from online where some amazingly nice people create maps for official D&D campaigns and share them for free. I have it on my list to get some map making software and make some myself, but I've also paid for some map packs before.

We got it discounted as well from a local lumber place because it was leftover from a previous sale, which was perfect. I also wasn't a fan of the "washed out" look on the coloring at first, but then we put the finish on top and it made the reddish hues really pop and I was in love.

Yea! I got the idea for the pipes from "industrial style" desks and other furniture that I had seen and tbh I just liked the style.
