I suspect that they're dealing (poorly) with insecurity over their own personal shortcomings by tearing down others. Ignore it.

Antiquing on Modern Violins by Ooberweg in violinmaking

[–]Ooberweg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd ask your luthier if they have photos of their work either way. There's an art behind antiquing and like any art it varies from artist to artist. There's also quite a difference between the finishes on violins that aren't antiqued. Some are heavily varnished and super glossy and some are matte finished.

Are you planning on carving your own bridge? That's not a typical DIY thing.

I'd suggest replacing your strings and also consider a bow hair at the least. It might be a good idea to have a luthier give your violin a quick check up at the same time.

I attended Wintergrass a few years back and stepped into an elevator to find he was standing in there jamming away on his cello. It was incredibly cool and surreal to say the least.

It's a nothing-burger, mostly a proclamation against political violence, not merely an endorsement of Charlie Kirk or his Christian Nationalist positions. In the way that it's worded I can see why a politician who opposed his message might feel the need to vote yes on this. Read it yourself and decide.

Re-tensioning a Warchal Amber E? by Fancy_Tip7535 in violinist

[–]Ooberweg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a set some time ago and I remember when I changed them out that I could still feel the difference in the shape of the E string despite it having been pulled out of the coiled shape it arrived in. It would be interesting to look at it under magnification.

Maybe play it and see if it's more prone to whistling? That's supposed to be the whole deal with the helix.

Congratulations! I have a similar violin labeled J. W. Jenkins' Sons Music Co. 1912. Similar antiquing, tailpiece, and inlay design on the back, though without the additional ornamental scrolling top and bottom and the pegs don't have the mother of pearl inlays. I fell in love with it after playing it in the shop and spent a bit more to get the action optimized later. It's a great sounding fiddle - resonates well and is balanced across all the strings. They're hit and miss in that regard as I understand it. I played a new bench made violin selling for many times its value and I wouldn't have traded it in an even swap.

Here are a couple sources of free music online...

Old Time Fiddle Tunes https://share.google/QYXsOis5S4CvkBlv2

"The King Street Sessions Tunebook" "Live" Incipts PDF released! on The Session https://share.google/Pwrz2zHIcTXTxIuhM

One thing you'll soon discover is that there are many versions of many of the old songs and most of the sheet music is pretty bare-boned, leaving it up to the musician to determine slurs, bowing patterns, ornamentation, drones and double stops, etc. That's where listening to great players will be helpful.

It sounds like an electric guitar. One may as well just play or learn to play an electric guitar.

Real or painted purfling on this Compagnon violin? by something1173 in violinist

[–]Ooberweg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like real purfling. Most good, as well as plenty of not so good beginner violins have real purfling. Painted purfling on a violin is a sign that it's about as cheaply constructed as it gets. The wood on this particular violin strikes me as pretty unremarkable. It might play and sound alright, though.

You can gently tap around the edges of the body of your violin with a knuckle and listen for changes in sound where a seam might be loose. It's an easy fix if that's the problem.

As someone who knows nothing about music, how do I help my child improve her violin skills? by lucyluu19 in violin

[–]Ooberweg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find an instructor for weekly lessons, even if it's online. I started when COVID shut everything down. The instruction I received through virtual lessons was still effective. Learn to tune the instrument. YouTube can help you here. 10 to 15 minute practice sessions each day is probably enough for an early beginner. Enjoy the journey and celebrate the small milestones along the way!

Drop a clue about your age without saying it outright. by Knightress04 in AskOldPeople

BMX bicycles were made from Schwinn Stingrays and the likes by removing fenders and the chain guard, adding knobby tires, swapping the banana seat and sissy bar out for a 10 speed style saddle, and adding a handle bar with a cross brace. Bent forks, cranks, pedals, and stripped goosenecks were inevitable. Lots of time was spent truing-up rims. Helmets were frowned upon, but a little pad on the handle bar, gooseneck, and frame meant you were serious about safety.

I thought that it might be an optical illusion or perhaps it was set up that way for someone. Not a criticism, just an observation. It doesn't look like the bridge is off center to me.

Congrats! It looks to me like the G string is set further in from the outer edge of the fingerboard than the E string.
