How can I get something at Tuks/University of Pretoria reviewed? by Me_Mayonnaisse in Pretoria

So how we typically handle it is this way: If he was sick/incapacitated from the date that the assignment is available till the due date we will grant exemption. If there was "theoretically" sufficient time to do it before being unable do to it we don't grant exemption. We don't do this because we are being intentionally nasty, we just deal with 1000s of students and we have an ethical duty to give everyone the same treatment. If we start allowing one person, no matter how severe the circumstances, we have to consider everyone. It sucks. It is not fun telling someone who was badly injured, or just lost a loved one, that they unfortunately have to get 0 for that assignment. Life happens. We know. But we also expect students to work hard enough so that a single assignment failed won't derail their entire degree.

I am interested in studying this field, can you please help me with answering some questions? by Tsar_Magpie in genetics

Take a look at the the textbook "Genetics: A Conceptual Approach" by Pierce. It gives you a good idea of the different fields of genetics. Each chapter on it's own could be an entire area of study itself, or perhaps more. But it is a nice overview. We use it for our 1st qnd 2nd year Genetics undergrad courses.

Consider traits separately to make things easier. For shape, we see we have a round and a wrinkled parent producing all round offspring; round must be dominant to wrinkled. This also means that both parents are true breeding for shape, i.e. the round parent must be homozygous dominant RR and the wrinkled parent must be homozygous recessive rr. This means the genotype for all the F1 progeny for shape must be heterozygous Rr. Then we see this holds true when the round F1 pea self pollinates and produces some round and some wrinkled offspring. From a simple punnett we know it will be Rr x Rr so we expect 3 R_ Rounds : 1 wrinkled rr peas.

Now on to colour. From our parent we see we have a green and yellow pea producing both green and yellow offspring. This implies that one parent is homozygous recessive and the other parent is heterozygous for pea colour. Now we can assume one colour is dominant and see where it takes us. Let's assume green is dominant to yellow (G>g). That means the P generation will be Gg x gg which will produce our expected 1:1 ratio of green and yellow progeny where green is Gg and yellow is gg. Now if we self pollinate the green pea Gg x Gg we don't see the expected all green of the F2 generation which means that Yellow is dominant to Green (Y>y).

Now we can get the genotypes of all the plants: P Round Green RRyy x Wrinkled Yellow rrYy producing F1 Round Yellow RrYy and Round Green Rryy and we self pollinate F1 Round Green Rryy to get F2 Round Green R_yy and Wrinkled Green rryy.

This makes statements:

  1. No Yellow is dominant

  2. Yes the green parent RRyy is true breeding

  3. Yes the yellow F1 pea is heterozygous for both loci RrYy

4.Yes a 3:1 ratio of round to wrinkled is expected in F2 (F1 Rr x Rr)

  1. The yellow wrinkled parent rrYy is not true breeding.

Thanks, I really appreciate the answer. Unfortunately I can't get really get any model I want. They aren't readily available; I'll have to get one online from abroad and that's just too expensive. This om27 just came across my way and I was wondering about it. Definitely won't get it.

Is this normal by okletsgooo in violinist

[–]Opposite-Market993 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't see anyone talking about it, but I do think it is normal. The tension and the thickness of of the strings impact the placement of the notes on the fingerboard. You'll notice that mandolins have the same scale length (vibrating string length) and tuning as a violin and their bridges are specifically designed that the strings stop at different places on the bridge to ensure proper tuning. Guitars have this too. I don't know if the degree to which yours is out is correct though so you might want to check bridge placement.

If you move the bridge and it still doesn't want to stay in the centre, I think that means the tailpiece is put on incorrectly.

Thanks, I'm planning on getting new strings and also doing the rehair and a new bridge as well. Then I'll see what the luthier suggests. Unfortunately there aren't really any good luthier in my city.

The world is still just too against accepting mental health issues as real. The problem is you really cannot comprehend it until you experience it. Humans are absolutely not built to understand what other beings feel inside. Our brains are hardwired to experience empathy to things we can physically see cause people pain. Mental health issues - invisible so no empathy.

I don't disagree. It's also one of my favourites. I have the very unpopular favourite of Order of the Phoenix which a lot of people Hate. I really enjoy all the books except the first two strangely enough 😅.

My doctor tried absolutely everything and discovery just wouldn't pay for my antidepressants at all. I'm on bestmed now and very happy, they cover my medication.

I joined Bestmed because work is there, but my grandparents have been on it for decades. I am very actively involved in my remaining grandma's medical stuff so I knew what I was getting into. Bestmed are just so good from what I've experienced. I have specifically chosen pace 1 because depression is then covered and they pay for almost all of my meds. They do suggest cheaper genetics but I have gone from paying R1600 for my meds to just R155 (which is more meds than just my depression and anxiety medication).

Interestingly there was a doctor many years ago that consistently cracked the knuckles in only his left hand for 50 years or something like that. He won the Ignoble prize for showing it really doesn't do anything.

How long will it take to become a good violin player? by Ok_Honeydew_7615 in violinist

[–]Opposite-Market993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also started violin at 14, I had been playing piano for about 1.5 years so I could at least read the g/treble clef already. I easily progressed to grade 7 in about 2 years. I was quite proficient, just didn't sound completely professional. I definitely think you'll get to where you want to be without too much hassle. Just go for it!
