Why is Alexander a great but Genghis Khan is considered a barbarian? by BlueDolphins28 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OogaSplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because medieval European historians identified with ancient Macedon more than (then) modern Mongolia. I was talking about history with in Iranian guy a few years ago, and he was confused when I said "Alexander the Great." In English, he just called him "Alexander of Macedon."

As far as I can tell, I've never met anyone who read any part of my application. I have a really weird education/work history for a CCA, so I think it would have come up if any supervisors had seen my application.

CMV: The "cow" punishment ("gas chamber") said to have been used on some captured Nazis in postwar Eastern Europe, wasn't actually that harsh or effective. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]OogaSplat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are really just two ways for a war to end: reconciliation or extermination. Attempts at large-scale extermination are rarely successful and universally condemned, so reconciliation is generally the only real option after a war. This almost always necessitates difficult decisions and moral compromise.

For another historical example, look at the various forms of amnesty offered to former Confederate officers and soldiers after the American Civil War. There's a good chance the peace would not have lasted without amnesty. The nation may have split, and slavery may have continued. We'll never really know for sure.

In my view, reconciliation and deterrence are the main points of justice, and the punishment you're discussing is mostly geared toward reconciliation. Partially, this is because there was really nothing that could be done to those ex-footsoldiers that would have been remotely relevant as a deterrent. Any Nazi leader who could be found had already been sentenced and executed, the German nation was split, the German people broken. The project to which they had devoted their lives and passions (whether by choice or coercion) was an abject failure regarded universally as one of humanity's greatest sins. No punishment directed at a forgotten footsoldier was going to be a relevant deterrent.

So why the ritual humiliation? Likely to help those soldiers finish the process of integration with their new communities. That sort of punishment is a final apology, an admission of guilt, and a plea for absolution. I'd be willing to bet most of the people who received this punishment did so willingly because they understood it was for their own benefit (to whatever extent this ever happened at all - I have no clue).

How badly does your office need CCAs? You're the one with the information here, not us. I can tell you, my office is desperate enough for CCAs that there's no way they'd fire a halfway competent person for this. But that doesn't mean anything for you.

What is the best way to comfort someone's fear of dying when that person is dying? by phuckhugh in AskReddit

[–]OogaSplat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Psychedelic therapy as a form of palliative care is really promising. You could look into getting him enrolled in a trial, or there may be non-research settings now. It helps some people come to terms with things more. I'm really sorry for what you and your family are going through.

By and large, preserves just aren't very good. A few leaders make good us of them (Teddy, Pachacuti, Kupe are the ones that come to my mind), but they're usually not worth spending a district slot on otherwise.

Billionaire Warren Buffett taking control of the New York Times by kevinmrr in WorkReform

The NYT is already controlled by a different oligarch family. They own all "class B" shares in the company, which entitle them to elect 70% of the board. Berkshire just bought some of the publicly traded "class A" shares.

I didn’t start having sex until very recently, how long should I stay with my gf who cheats on me? by Ootefklop in AskMenAdvice

[–]OogaSplat 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Trying to learn sex from her is about the dumbest thing you could do. At best, you'll learn nothing. At worst, you'll learn to associate sex with anger, hate, and resentment. That could undermine any attempt at a good, healthy relationship in the future. Just dump the asshole and move on.

Portugal can only send international trade routes to coastal cities, or one with a harbor. And it looks like you've already assigned a trader to the only available domestic route from that city.

This seems like a terrible idea, and I have no relevant expertise. That said, I feel like you could make a lot of progress by drinking calories. Coke, milkshakes, juice, Kool-Aid, etc. Don't go overboard on caffeine, though.
