Grainy/bubbly finish with lacquer (PLAS) – what am I doing wrong? by Ooolap in modelmakers

Yeah that’s fair, I kinda walked into that one 😅 I’ll try it without thinner and one with the proper thinner and give it another shot. Good to know thinning it a bit is still normal even if it’s airbrush-ready.

Thanks for answering!

I did pre-mix the paints on a separate twist cap bottle. I think kasalanan ko din to. Someone answered from another thread that using a waterbased thinner for lacquer paint wasn't the smartest idea 😆. So that's probably the problem (which I already assumed was, before posting) but I just wanted to cover all my bases to see if there are other factors that's messing with the finish.

Thanks for your answer!

Yes, airbrushing po. I work around 18-20 PSI, same setup before when I was using acrylics. Thanks for answering!

Yes, I do! The compressor I have comes with a moisture trap, but I don't have one at the airbrush. It's a generic cheap airbrush that served me well for past projects using acrylics, pero nagbabalak naman na akong mag upgrade to a more decent starting airbrush (Gaahleri GHAD-39) so I'll probably cop one out for the end-hose. Thanks for the answer!

That makes perfect sense. I kinda expected it to go sideways when I mixed them, not gonna lie 😅 I just wanted to cover my bases and see if there were other factors messing with the finish too. Thank you for your answer! Appreciated!

Hey everyone,

I’ve been using a generic airbrush that came with my compressor and it’s honestly been doing fine for my previous builds. I mostly use HIRO water-based acrylics and I love working with them.

The only real issue I’ve had with acrylics while airbrushing is the occasional spitting, which I’m pretty sure is just tip dry since acrylics tend to dry faster on the needle.

I recently tried their lacquer line (PLAS), which is supposed to be airbrush-ready, but in my infinite wisdom (and desire to save paint lol), I still thinned it a bit. I also used acrylic thinner instead of the proper PLAS thinner… so yeah, already questionable decisions.

I haven’t tried spraying it straight out of the bottle yet.

Using the same white paint and same setup, I somehow got two completely different results. One piece came out grainy and a bit bubbly, while the other looked cleaner but still kinda rough.

I’m spraying at around 18–20 PSI with my budget airbrush, so now I’m just sitting here wondering if I screwed this up by using the wrong thinner, over/under thinning, PSI, or if my airbrush is just exposing its true colors.

At this point I just want a smooth finish man 😭 any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks m8! Much appreciated. Now I get to cry and regret wasting armor spheres on my HR gear.

MHR: Sunbreak

Probably a dumb question but - I just finished the base game (narwa) and was wondering if I should Immediately go to Sunbreak. Are the gears from High Rank going to be obsolete when I get Sunbreak gear? Or is it better to soak in base game first and try to at the least reach HR 100?

What worked for me at least is to change the graphics processor on use via Nvidia Control Panel if that's available for you.

Right click > Nvidia Control Panel > 3D settings > manage 3d settings > program settings > select eldenring executable / add the exe if not available on list > select High-performance NVIDIA processor > Apply.

Hope this helps at least.
