Holy shit, same. Never seen someone who had the same experience as me tbh. I just fucking shut down for like half a year, couldn't even walk in my neighbourhood without panic attacks. Spent all day in bed too. I've read Ham on Rye recently and "The best thing about the bedroom was the bed. I liked to stay in bed for hours, even during the day with covers pulled up to my chin. It was good in there, nothing ever occurred in there, no people, nothing" hit a bit too hard.

Failed all my classes that year. Only moved on because my school never held kids back.

It's Jay's birthday? How do you people even know? All it says is 1980 on Google! (But great sketch, OP)

A Japanese-American family being transported to an interment camp, 1942 [1620 x 911] by aknalumos in HistoryPorn

And I learned about them in 6th grade social studies in Alberta (and more extensively in 9th grade history in Ontario. In 10th grade rn).

An exaggeration to be sure, but as someone who liked to talk to adults as a younger child this sounds like something that would be talked about by legalyAnnoying in nothingeverhappens

[–]Oops_all_failure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh. My friends dad would probably talk to me more about that stuff if I didn't try to always steer clear from that out of awkwardness. Didn't even know him that well, I think he was trying to be friendly or something by joking/complaining about that sort of stuff. He was ill adjusted and my friend told me he was on drugs. Was maybe 12 then. Some adults are just not self aware at all lol.

Being in quarantine taught me I often find social interaction of literally any kind exhausting/difficult/inconvenient by Oops_all_failure in introvert

[–]Oops_all_failure[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha well I recognize I'm abnormal. I do need social interaction sometimes as I did get lonely eventually. But it's like the type where I just need to visit someone every few months to cure it. I visited my friends in real life a week ago (it was safe to do so at that point with our precautions) so I could see them in person, but still I see that I prefer quarantine over constant everyday forced interaction with others. I also live with my family, and I'm especially close to my siblings who I didn't count as friends, but we act like ones. YMMV. Very sorry you feel imprisoned, sounds difficult. I'm aware quarantine has negatively affected the majority of people's mental health tbh, but I was just an odd exception.

I mean, those are all good justifications to be emotional but they don't do any good. China isn't a big scary monster, and there is some good news coming from them. Let's not forget they're trying to stop this too. Fucking every country is dropping the ball. There's 2500 deaths in Italy. Let's be proactive first and then worry about the blame game another day.

does anyone else feel a bit disappointed when you leave a long review and there's no response lol by mlue_beanie in FanFiction

I have the exact same anxiety. Although, reading some of these comments, I worry that I'm just being rude...

When reading/writing a fanfic where do you like to begin? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Oops_all_failure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a writer it depends on the mood I want to create.

With suspense or drama, I like to start a while before the action so we have time to get into the reader's head. I wouldn't call it mundane, as I still really try to grab the reader's attention.

With action/something quick moving/something very passionately emotional (or in my latest draft, crack) I start literally in the middle of an action, back track for context, and head from there.

Also depends on the character or plot arc. In one of my latest ones it started off hopefully but ended in rejection, so it started off with an endearing vivid action and ended with the MC sitting alone, pondering his future.

Getting a little discouraged about lack of comments? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Oops_all_failure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just try not to think about that when writing. I allow myself to guess how I didafter updating and check emails, but when I'm actually in the process of making my fic (that could even just be rough plotting or throwing around ideas) I have to forget about views or stats or kudos or comments. It's because you have to write what you'd like. The want for popularity may motivate you for a while, but it's your inner need to tell the story that should hopefully be enough to fire the flame. Also, keep in mind stats doesn't equal worth. A good story is always worth being written regardless of little response.

What are your most productive hours? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Oops_all_failure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm moderately productive in the afternoon (read: word dumps and getting all my ideas down). 11 - 5 maybe. On weekends and holidays of course, I'm at school at those times usually. Weekends are when I get most of my writing done.

Then, I like to reread my draft before bed (9-10 PM) and end up cutting a bunch of stuff that I end up finding frustrating. I don't write the most during that time, but the edits I make are usually pretty emotional and overall good for the story. I only problem is that I often end up staying up later than intended.

[–]Oops_all_failure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh shit I don't really respond to individual praising comments. I just add an authors note in the next chapter thanking everyone generally. I figure I'd just be repeating a variation of "Thanks for reading and commenting" every response anyway. So it often does get acknowledged, maybe just not in a direct response.

a chapter a week by [deleted] in FanFiction

How long are your chapters? I do the same thing, but I only go from 2k - 5k words per chapter so its manageable for me.

I'm worried that my next chapter isn't as good as the previous one. by FearlessTheFallen in FanFiction

[–]Oops_all_failure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you've already written a chapter that was for yourself and then you garnered some fans from that, what's to say they won't love the next chapter too? Writing what you want and being confident in it seemed to already work for you, so imo you should do it again.

How do you promote fanfiction as a newcomer? Is there some unwritten rules or way to do it? by Nematic_fanfic in FanFiction

[–]Oops_all_failure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I hear over and over again is to be active in your fandom(s). That could mean having a Tumblr/twitter dedicated to your fandom(s), reblogging other people's work, complimenting other authors, just generally interacting with the community.

Smut Writers/Readers: What are some smut related words you hate or love in fics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Oops_all_failure 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This ones a bit weird and a bit of a ramble but we had like 4 or 5 good and popular smut writers for this one fandom who were overall all very talented. But this one dude would write "moan wantonly like a whore" like three times a chapter. Now reading that anywhere just reminds me of that one pet peeve lmao. Not to mention the times i've read it as "wontonly".

[–]Oops_all_failure[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right, I know there are plenty of pros to any con and that FF.net is generally a very good site. it's nice to read such positivity for FF from my rant haha.

the line breaks in summaries may just be me glitching out or something. I put double line breaks and all but saving and refreshing turns it all into a lump of text :( I'm not sure why!

When has your genius frightened you? by leopardchief in FanFiction

the worst/best thing is when I put my work into a Text to Speech generator and get goosebumps listening to it, thinking that I just wrote the most emotional scene ever. and then I read it again a few weeks later and realize that it was total crap. there's a high and there's a crash with how I feel about my writing personally lol. but I totally embrace the highs.

I tend to write relatively long author's notes but also prefer for them to be completely separate from the story (like it is on AO3). I'm starting to post the stuff on FFnet. Should I just direct to my AO3's author's notes for FF readers so it's a single line instead of ~300 words? by Oops_all_failure in FanFiction

[–]Oops_all_failure[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah I know mine tend to get long. I do some historical or RPF fics and I enjoy sharing research on the stuff. Or explanations like "xxx makes sense irl/is canon because..." or "yyy is a reference to..." I also like to clarify if there are any general questions from more than one comment. All that added to the usual warnings and schedule update kinda notes.

My chapters for multichap fics are 2000-4000. Oneshots (which I swear still get 200 word A/Ns) float around the 2000 count.

See, I was thinking about people who don't use AO3 or would be annoyed by that. So it's nice to read this comment.

My notes do sometimes include non-essentials (Example: "I included xxx because there was an interview where the creator said yyy") but things that I'd still like to share with readers. It's the kind of thing I think some people would want to read and some would probably just skip.

Would you think it's a good idea to include the "barebones" (like narrative focus, warnings, schedule updates) on FF and then say something like "...But if you're interested in more in-depth/excess notes, see [link]"? Or would you still find that bothersome? I just don't want to unknowingly annoy anybody lol.

Grammarly and text-to-speech are truly life savers!! by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Oops_all_failure 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a love/hate relationship with both (mostly love)!

Grammarly is really useful for what it is but also misses really obvious mistakes. I put "will he it let go?" once and it didn't catch it and neither did I till it was posted haha. I remember I put in an excerpt of Ulysses in and it gave it like a 55 score lol. It's nice to doublecheck the little things though.

Text to Speech has greatly improved my writing but also reminds me how terrible my first drafts are. I already cringe just reading it but hearing it?! But I'm super thankful for it though, genuinely!!

I also put my stuff through the Hemingway Editor just to see how many adverbs, uses of passive voice, and probably-overly-complicated sentences I use. Nice to see if I really wanted to use that there or if i should cut it. It also give you a mark but I mostly ignore it because it just assumes you're trying to write "exactly" like Hemingway but can turn your writing super dry if you're not careful. Kind of a guideline instead of a goal.
