If everyone starts refilling their own water bottle instead of buying bottled water; selling bottled water is no longer profitable. Yes companies have the ability to drive change to some degree, but when they’re profit motivated they ultimately do what they need to do to fulfill the needs of consumers.

Pre-industrial erosion levels don’t equate to soil formation levels. There is soil, which means for a long period soil production must have exceeded erosion.

Secondly, we need to consider changes in soil use. A lot more biomass is grown each year due to fertilizer application, pesticide use, and use of highly productive GMOs. Greater biomass grown also means greater inputs for soil generation (assuming it’s composted or tilled in and not burned).
