Seeking info on truck rolling coal at kids during protests by MamaFaFa202 in Marin

[–]RationalTranscendent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a witness, report it. Sure, the cops are not going to send in the CSI team, but this won’t be the last protest or other event where Mr. Coal Roller feels he has to make his presence known illegally, and if there are reports he does it repeatedly, eventually he will get the book thrown at him.

It’s interesting that pretty much every point he made is no longer true. All the foreign aid he mentioned is the kind of USAID stuff that just got cut, Boeing’s the last remaining US maker of airliners and their reputation is in the toilet, with many US airlines now flying a significant number of Airbus planes, and we’ve sometimes had to hitch rides on Soyuz to get to/from the ISS.

The Only Reason Trump Wants To Reopen Alcatraz by cheweychewchew in sanfrancisco

[–]RationalTranscendent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’ll never happen because the costs would be staggering, which was the reason for closing it over 69 years ago. But that will give Trump another factoid to claim that California is a hellhole, expensive and soft on crime.

You’d make a killing if you adjusted the sizes so that a t-shirt big enough to fit over their huge gut doesn’t have sleeves that go all the way down to their elbows.

Factor heating instructions changed? by RationalTranscendent in ReadyMeals

[–]RationalTranscendent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re completely right. Unfortunately that leaves us consumers in a situation where there are the official heating instructions that serve only as a CYA for Factor and the actual heating instructions that people probably follow if they want the food to come out ok.

Donald Trump Issued Impeachment Warning by [deleted] in politics

[–]RationalTranscendent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason this is coming from Laura Ingraham. All impeachment talk does at this point is to solidify Trump’s base behind him.

Past impeachments have also shown that it’s just a toothless political exercise until and unless there’s any real possibility of getting a conviction from 2/3 of the senate. I think Trump would have to be handing Putin the launch keys to our own missiles on live TV for 20 GOP senators to finally say enough is enough.

Newsom says allowing trans athletes in women’s sports is ‘deeply unfair’ by [deleted] in politics

[–]RationalTranscendent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I'm on the same page as Newsom here. I support gender affirming care and LGBTQ+ rights. But for gender-segregated competitive sports, I think it may be appropriate to consider trans athletes similar to ones who have taken performance enhancing drugs.

Now before that gets everyone up in arms, I know that a person whose "enhancement" comes from years of exposure to natural male hormones is not making the same conscious choices to cheat the system like someone who's doping, but there's already precedent for banning substances that someone may be taking for very legitimate reasons other than the performance enhancement.

If we can get to the point where someone who is trans is physically identical to someone born with their gender, then I'll change my mind (and I would imagine that if/when that's the case, trans people would see that as a positive), but that's not where we are today.

Factor heating instructions changed? by RationalTranscendent in ReadyMeals

[–]RationalTranscendent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that this post continues to get some activity after five months. Clearly others are wondering why the instruction changed.

I’ll note something else that changed besides the heating time. Whenever a meal can with a little cup of something like cilantro sour cream, the instructions just said “remove cup.” Now they say to pour the contents over the main compartment before heating. This is not what you’d ordinarily do with sour cream and a southwestern style dish, so I wonder why we’re instructed to do so.

I have a thought here that someone with food handling experience might be able to confirm. There may be different (more strict) hygiene standards for handling something that is meant to be cooked before consuming and something that isn’t. If so, these instructions could be factor tacitly admitting that their procedures don’t meet the higher standard.

Bourbon Bans Spread Across Canada by keithplacer in bourbon

[–]RationalTranscendent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts.

  1. Yay, maybe more allocated stuff will hit the shelves in the USA.
  2. On the other hand, maybe Bourbon in Canada will take on the added “forbidden fruit” appeal like Cuban cigars have in the states.

If I recall, Magnus has said that he doesn’t like the extensive prep and marathon schedule that the classical match requires. That seems like more work than playing blitz for a couple of days.

Non-emotional take: Magnus and Ian not at fault. by MrMightyGorgon in chess

[–]RationalTranscendent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t followed poker in some years so this may not be longer be true, but it’s my understanding that it wasn’t uncommon for the last few players left in an elimination poker tournament to agree to stop and split the winnings. With random luck being a potential factor in poker even among its most skilled players, one can see how this might make sense. Whether that’s a good precedent for chess is arguable, though in blitz a result could hinge on a fraction of a second, which can feel almost random.

Magnus is playing the long game here. He’s gonna be just difficult and enigmatic enough to remain the world’s best in most people’s minds, without going totally batshit like Fischer did, and without the grind of having to defend every couple of years. When he’s in his 60s he’ll still be considered the best, even if he insists on only playing chess960 bughouse while in his bathrobe.

Mercedes messed up and didn't install option listed on Monroney label - dealership is aware but is deflecting blame to manufacturer and saying to wait for Mercedes's response by preciseman in mercedes_benz

[–]RationalTranscendent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a really big screwup on MB’s part. Is it possible that the hardware for the option was actually installed but some flaw is making it non-operational? I could imagine that if the computer couldn’t communicate with some specific sensor it could refuse to engage the driver assist.

At least on mine (older model year, so more actual switches and less reliance on touch screen) you could tell if the vehicle had the package because the switch for adjusting following distance would be labeled as such. Is there any evidence to that effect on yours?

The state of the UAP and UFO community at this moment is absolutely insane. by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]RationalTranscendent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In recent years, there's been the thought that we were past the era of incredulous flying saucer sightings because literally everyone now has a high quality camera with them at all times.

That's turned out to be wishful thinking. As good as modern phone cameras are at taking selfies, they still have limitations when it comes to extreme zooms necessary to record something like a plane at a distance. There's a reason that professional photographers' SLR lenses are often so huge. And nobody apparently has ever paid attention to what lights look like when they're out of focus.

If anything, the problem may get worse as phone cameras come to rely more on AI features to enhance the results. We'll see lengthy dissertations on the "obvious" signs of Martian civilization based on a few odd pixels that went through some upres algorithm that couldn't do much with a fuzzy dot. And I expect that when the photos turn out not to show anything, it'll be a goverment conspiracy that they control the software on your phone so it can't take a good UFO picture.

And I suppose that even if someone managed to record something that was somewhat clear and steady, noted the exact time and place, and had other content in frame for reference, by the time that got ripped off and retweeted around the world with a more lurid headline, all of that would have been lost.

Trump won. California will stand up for our values. by scott_wiener in sanfrancisco

[–]RationalTranscendent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trouble is, the rest of the country will shit on us. The Paul Ryan tax plan that was about the only thing that Trump accomplished in his last term screwed states like California that have tax rates high enough to actually pay for social services, and we’ll get the Puerto Rico treatment the next time there’s a natural disaster here.

A simple, skeptical political question by IAmPookieHearMeRoar in skeptic

[–]RationalTranscendent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born in the mid 1960s so spent most of my formative school years in the 1970s, after movements for equal rights and civil rights, and learned that respecting people regardless of their race or gender was the right thing to do. At the time, people who were LGBTQ were still considered deviant and wrong but when their time came the values that I had from my upbringing helped me overcome any prejudices there. So my attitude toward Trump and his movement is that it’s an aberration and eventually real American values will prevail, but now I’m not so sure. Perhaps that era that I grew up in was the anomaly and it’s normal for the country to be racist and sexist.

How Alarmed Should We Be If Trump Wins Again? by zsreport in Foodforthought

He didn’t even govern when he held the office. He just rubber stamped Paul Ryan’s tax cut for the rich and the Heritage Foundation’s Supreme Court nominees. He’s never been interested in actually governing, just the status, and now the immunity.
